A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Sweet morning floofs!
Good morning.
I’ve been up since about midnight-thirty, and have had my shower, written to Charlie, put the casserole I made yesterday into baggies and then in the freezer, and I’m about ready to take out the trash and bring in the water from the truck. Then I’ll see how I feel and take it from there.
Will you have access to WiFi while you’re gone?
Probably not. In the past, I’ve found the Scout camp to be something of a black hole, interwebs-wise. I turn off my phone unless I’m using it to take pictures of mushrooms.
When you talk of going camping, I recall the absolute beauty of the places we spent years as campground hosts. The hard part of course, was having a son in the army.
But every time you talk of going camping, I envy you!

Thanks!
I’m glad to know Puppy is feeling better. I hate to see them when they’re sick. They just don’t understand.
Our local scout camp is not especially scenic, but it’s outdoors. I’m looking forward to this campout especially because I’m not in charge of anything except Kathleen. There’s even another environmental educator - with a certification and everything, not just copies of “Common Forest Trees” and “Pond Life.”
I’m sorry...I only made it through that half way! LOL! As for the movie, I liked the black and white one best. It’s a funny movie, in either version!
WOW. This could almost be a vacation for you, what with no Patrick Driving Adventures and only Mom Duty. What a bonus!
:o])
I haven’t had even a partial vacation from the quotidian minutiae for a loooooong time.
Maybe it’s time to visit your mother again...?
Maybe. She’s discussed coming here, but currently is saying not until early next year, but she hasn’t suggested I visit there. I like to have her decide what she would like.
That’s probably a good idea. It’s a Mom Thing, ya know.
Especially an 82-year-old mom thing, I think. With opinions!
“FEED me, Seymour!”
The whole thing is a parable of Big Govt.
“Don’t insult the monkey!”
The warning is apropos; insulted monkeys throw... stuff.
This is true! And some things are more prone to sticking than others. ;o]
