Israeli actress Gal Gadot has been slammed on social media after she was cast to play Cleopatra in the upcoming historical epic about the iconic Egyptian queen.
The 35-year-old on Sunday confirmed she will play the titular role in a new movie after Paramount Pictures won the rights to the film in a bidding war between Universal, Warner Bros., Apple and Netflix.
The casting however, immediately drew outrage from confused social media users who wrongly assumed Cleopatra was black and North African.

Even the Greek part doesn’t matter. . The Egyptians weren’t sub-Saharan Africans. They seem to have come from the Mesopotamian area and weren’t black.
Despite how stupid this is lots of groups have fake histories they try to push. This is just another one.
The real story is Gal Godot. She is very near the top of my list of attractive actresses. I don't go see many films in theaters (none for many months now - can't remember the last one) but if this is done well I'll go to see Ms Gadot...

A coworker of mine was an Egyptian Jew whose family immigrated to US. She applied as an African American to college and was accepted. When the college found out she was white, they accused her of fraud and rescinded her acceptance. They relented after being threatened with a lawsuit, however her scholarship was revoked.

I’m surprised Moslems haven’t expressed outrage about Cleopatra being portrayed by a Jew. Could offer a great hook to promote the film, though — “Cleopatra 2021 - She let’s her own people go!”

The whole article is premised on two tweets by completely random people that the author doesn’t even claim are known or important or influential.

I had this argument with a teacher 20 years ago. She said black kids need a heritage to be proud of. Well shouldn’t that heritage be real?
If she is white, they’ll need to make Marc Anthony black so they can slip in the obligatory interracial romance.
