The Uncle Bens rice brand is getting a new name: Bens Original.
Parent firm Mars Inc. unveiled the change Wednesday for the 70-year-old brand, the latest company to drop a logo criticized as a racial stereotype. Packaging with the new name will hit stores next year.
We listened to our associates and our customers and the time is right to make meaningful changes across society, said Fiona Dawson, global president for Mars Food, multisales and global customers. When you are making these changes, you are not going to please everyone. But its about doing the right thing, not the easy thing.
Several companies have retired racial imagery from their branding in recent months, a ripple effect from the Black Lives Matters (sic) protests over the police killing of George Floyd and other African Americans.

We did it in CA, too. Older friends of the family were addressed as Uncle and Aunt, despite having no blood or marriage connection. Allows properly respectful interaction between kids/younger people and non-family adults/elders. Worked pretty well! Can’t have THAT anymore!!!
Will the tv commercials and print advertising prominently feature black families like all other companies do or would it be racist to depict black people eating Bens Original?

But, isn’t Ben still an uncle?
I give up! Uncle!
Aunt. He transitioned
No more blacks on food packaging. And definitely do not show any more blacks in food commercials. It’s racist for blacks to make or eat food.
Uncle Ben implies you have an adult male in the family unit.
How about Aunt Rachel’s rice? And have a pic of Rachel Dolezal!
The “right thing” would have been to keep the fricken brand name the same. Even if I never bought the brand IT WAS NOT OFFENSIVE!
I found it much more offensive that I had to see Oprah on every edition of her magazine for a number of years while going through the checkout.
But wait....orange? Isnt that a dog whistle for Trump supporters?
I was a bit surprised to be called “uncle” by a young Sikh man at work. His manner indicated respect.
I think removing the iconic black and native American is wrong-headed.
What is racial imagery?
Does this mean no human can be shown on any logo and packaging? Because they all have a race?
Shouldnt Quaker Oats remove their man because he has a race that is white?
Or are we leaving only white people on packaging because that is not offensive?
What they really needed to do was make it a bit more edgy and contemporary......Tupacs Rice!!! You MoFos!!!
Cereal aisle worse. Cream of Wheat man and Aunt Jemima.
Not to mention Mrs. Butterworth, who may be construed as black.
Why not just properly address elders as Miss and Mister?
I know, no one does that anymore. Have to use first names all the time.
Not me. I worked hard to get to adult, and I like the titles. Thats the way I was raised.
Yeah, but what do we do about white rice?
