The Uncle Ben’s rice brand is getting a new name: Ben’s Original.

Parent firm Mars Inc. unveiled the change Wednesday for the 70-year-old brand, the latest company to drop a logo criticized as a racial stereotype. Packaging with the new name will hit stores next year.

“We listened to our associates and our customers and the time is right to make meaningful changes across society,” said Fiona Dawson, global president for Mars Food, multisales and global customers. “When you are making these changes, you are not going to please everyone. But it’s about doing the right thing, not the easy thing.”

Several companies have retired racial imagery from their branding in recent months, a ripple effect from the Black Lives Matters (sic) protests over the police killing of George Floyd and other African Americans. …

Really... just change the pic to a white guy and call it Chef Ben’s.

In fact - all characters used to market products should be white to be safe.

Wait... why is there no diversity in marketing again? Do these capitalist oppressors think there’s only one race?

Packaging and sports paraphernalia are being washed of minorities but at the same time every commercial and TV show is all minorities ( and queers ) all the time. I don’t get it.

He offends white Democrats.

In 1921 a mob of angry white Democrats burned down a black community.

In 2020 angry white Democrats resumed burning down black communities ... but this time they think they’re helping.

A few years down the road the complaint will be: “How come when I go to the supermarket, all I see are images of White people like Betty Crocker and Chef Boyardee on the packaging?” “Why don’t these companies use images of people of color to promote their products?” “That’s racist!”

Democrat whitie racists of the 50s and 60s would have loved this.

Who are the racists again?

I don’t see him in there, but since you asked, Takuya Yamashiro. (In his storyline, it wasn’t his uncle who was killed, but his father, Dr. Hiroshi Yamashiro, by the Iron Cross Army.)

Apparently, in the pre-Civil Rights South, it was considered polite / friendly to address older Negro men with the prefix "uncle."

Affirm.

Try to find Disney's 1946 movie "Song of the South" with the Uncle Remus narration. Based on the Georgia native Joel Chandler Harris' (1848-1908) Br'er Rabbit stories taken from AfroAmerican folk tales, the movie won an Oscar for its song "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" in 1948. Mr Harris was a longtime editor for the Atlanta Constitution newspaper and an advocate for regional and racial reconciliation in the 'New South'.

Now this movie and all of its iconic memes, 'tar baby', 'briar patch' etc. are verboten. Disney has never released this mixed animation & live action movie on any domestic home video.

Ben’s Original what?
Who’s Ben?
Is he no longer somebody’s uncle?

Reminds me of packaging that has The Original... and has a special banner “new and improved”.
