...the research team extracted and analysed DNA from the remains of 442 men, women and children... from archaeological sites in Scandinavia, the U.K., Ireland, Iceland, Greenland, Estonia, Ukraine, Poland and Russia, and mostly date to the Viking Age (ca. 750-1050 AD).
The team's analyses yielded a number of findings. One of the most noteworthy is that contrary to what has often been assumed, Viking identity was not limited to people of Scandinavian ancestry -- the team discovered that two skeletons from a Viking burial site in the Orkney Islands were of Scottish ancestry.
They also found evidence that there was significant gene flow into Scandinavia from the British Isles, Southern Europe, and Asia before and during the Viking Age, which further undermines the image of the Vikings as 'pure' Scandinavians.
Another discovery that runs counter to the standard image of the Vikings is that many had brown hair, not blonde hair.
The analyses' results also shed light on the Vikings' activities. For example, consistent with patterns documented by historians and archaeologists, the team found that Vikings who travelled to England generally had Danish ancestry, while the majority of Vikings who travelled to Scotland, Ireland, Iceland and Greenland had Norwegian ancestry. In contrast, Vikings who headed east were mostly from Sweden.
Interestingly, says Collard, data revealed a number of close kin among the 442 individuals. Four members of a Viking raiding party interred in a boat burial in Estonia were found to be brothers, while two individuals buried 300 to 400 kilometers apart in Sweden were found to be cousins. Perhaps even more strikingly, the team identified a pair of second-degree male relatives (i.e. half-brothers, nephew-uncle, or grandson-grandfather) from two sites, one in Denmark and one in England.

I find it interesting that the 1619 Project wants to blame the United States when it was NOT the United States but the Brits who colonized North America. There is a difference in this but then again there are people who believe North America had no history before 1619.
Another interesting development is the people who built the pyramids have said to not be slaves as was previously denoted. How much of this is true we will never know.
The slave trade as was in the West originated from the Arabs and was first introduced into the West by them. The West ever the capitalist opportunist found there could be money to be made. And the Western slave trade industry was born. Make sure you include the fact that the slave trade is still going strong in Sudan. However some people are calling this human trafficking. The slaves in the Sudan are being sent to places like the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia where the word for black is the same as the word for slave - abed (phonetically spelled in English). The slave trade originated with black tribes of Africa selling their prisoners of war into slavery.
Oh, yeah. Everyone is part something else.

The Vikings went, among other places, to Ireland. Irish went to Australia.
And they cant beat the Packers.
Vikings on both sides of my family. Dad’s side from Northern Ireland and Mother’s side from Normandy. Irish side were short with Brown or red hair. French side tall and strong with dark hair. What we expect to see is not always what happens. In fact the unexpected is probably more the rule
any cutthroat who could make himself understood and liked the action would wind up in the crew.
Ships, like the gallows, refuse no man.
and I believe I just read somewhere that there are more slaves in the world today then America had pre-civil war
But...but...but...only Americans thought their slaves were degenerates and fit only for slavery to a superior race.

When I adopted my black children Sowell helped me make sense of race and gave me an international perspective that took away the American drama
Yeah, sure.
But don't fret - in the next Hollywood movie, all of the Vikings will be black anyway.
They aren’t FOOTBALL PLAYERS?
Makes sense.
They invade or colonize other lands, have kids with the local women and the kids are vikings, too.
The Vikings did not always slaughter all enemies they encountered. They could and would take in “new comers” that chose the join them. It is NOT mysterious that their total gene pool went beyond Scandinavia, beyond the original lands of the Vikings.
Thanks all! As the account goes, the Varangian guard got that job when their leader hung his shield on the gates of Constantinople. Viking mercenaries helped hold the line and even turned the tide here and there (such as in Sicily, led by Hardraada).

Baddass history is awesome — not sure I can use it in the classroom, but I love the enthusiasm!
Glad to see that Dan Carlin has infected the discipline.
The ferocious seafaring vikings were a feared Scandinavian invader from the late 700’s AD. Over three centuries their ships carried the ruthless warriors to nearby and distant lands, which included the British Isles and northern Europe. They ranged as far as Northern Africa, the Middle East, the Mediterranean and present day Turkey and Canada. Doing battle as pirates, raiders and traders, the Viking voyagers formed settlements and governments in many parts of the world, establishing themselves and their descendents as rulers and nobility.Signs of VIKING ANCESTRY You Shouldn't Ignore
