Finally, A Black Batman? John Ridley, Nick Derington and DC Fandome

At the Batman Legacy panel at DC Fandome today, Jim Lee introduced John Ridley who talked about writing a new Batman series, with Nick Derington, bets known for his work on Mister Miracle, Batman Universe and Doom Patrol. The comic book will, as John Ridley put it "a slightly greater than 47% chance that he will be a person of colour" and that he will be using the comic to "delve into the Fox family" and that "Lucius Fox has been at Batman's side the longest." So… Luke Fox as Batman. Taken a while to get here.

John Ridley is lined up to write a Batman story in Batman: The Joker War Zone #1 with Luke Fox, out at the end of the month. Could this be the launch of the new Batman?

People confuse some characters with who they are and ignore changes. It’s not like saying Bruce Wayne or James Bond will be played by a black actor. But a black actor could be Batman or 007.

Yup, though some versions are so iconic, they will not be superseded. Wally West was supposed to succeed Barry Allen as the Flash, but it didn't really stick. And some of us still prefer the Jay Garrick "Golden Age" Flash version.

Well since they’ve been grabbing ‘any’ black and putting them in rolls they just don’t fit I’m getting really good at not watching if a black person is featured.....Of course morgan Freidman is always the exception. He’s certainly earned his place as an outstanding actor. His slolution on race is “You stop calling me a black man and I’ll stop calling you a white man...Just quite talking about it!”
