Coins Shortages & the Dangers of a Cashless Society

(CU News) - It’s become a standard at nearly every gas station, in my area, to request exact change for purchases. The coronavirus crisis has apparently sparked this nationwide coin shortage that has left retailers pleading for exact change.

It didn’t take too long for the conspiracy theories to begin the rounds in both the virtual and real worlds. I first began hearing comments and receiving emails about the change shortage issue conspiracies several weeks ago. At the time, I just placed them to the side and grinned. Can they really be true? After spending some time, it did not take long to view the situation as a result of three reasons. However, learning the nature of our coin shortage didn’t lessen the reality of the push towards a cashless society.

Three primary reasons most impacting the current coin shortage:

1. Disruptions in mint operations has been a recent issue.

2. Many banks closed their lobbies for several months and only allowed customers to make appointments for essential banking activities. Converting coins to paper money for their customers is far from a top priority at banks.

3. Many of the coin cashing machines in grocery stores were shut down for a period due to customer health concerns.

Like all good conspiracy theories, opportunities for mental exercises are plentiful. When you’re staring at the entry of this conspiracy, and deciding whether to enter the rabbit hole, how can you not be intrigued by the essential work variable? Walmart and Amazon workers are essential, yet the US Mint employees are not essential? The Mint’s production is a central currency and vital to American life. What better way to implement controls than through a cashless society?

Remember the federal employees in DC were told to work from home. The mint workers took all the coins with them and are hand stamping them. They call the Post Office to pick up their completed work, but they refuse because the packages are too heavy.

Aren’t we already largely “cashless” in that, the vast majority of the “money supply” economists talk about, is NOT made up of currency and coins? Since the vast majority of the “money supply” is made up of digitized debits and credits in computerized systems nowadays, aren’t we well on the way to being cashless? Could we soon reach a point where it’s just assumed you will use a debit card to spend the “cash” in your bank account, wherever you go?

China has already rolled out their own highly oppressive and frighteningly, controlling version of the social credit system. The Social Credit system in China was developed by Google and Apple who are bit by bit inserting it into our own society. Say something in"correct" and lose your job is a reality for a spreading portion of the society.

When we go cashless I expect a group of informal cash systems will spring up with local scrips in use, perhaps even backed by gold. Gold and silver will trade for goods and scales with specific gravity functions will appear in markets.
Gold and silver will be eventually outlawed and confiscated, too.

1. Disruptions in mint operations has been a recent issue.

/-),, current year issues tiny tiny fraction of coins in circulation,,try again !

2. Many banks closed their lobbies for several months and only allowed customers to make appointments for essential banking activities. Converting coins to paper money for their customers is far from a top priority at banks.

/-),,then there should be MORE coins than usual since many banks were closed and not converting to paper money,,try again !

3. Many of the coin cashing machines in grocery stores were shut down for a period due to customer health concerns.

/-) Then there should be more coins in circulation than usual cuz store machines weren’t converting to paper money not less !

Three strikes and these arguments are OUT.

Try again.

/-)

Then lead and brass will become the go-to commodities. People simply will not allow themselves to starve, be made homeless, lose vital utilities, etc. on a permanent because of some electronic glitch, or because TPTB have determined that they are “unworthy” of spending (or even keeping) their own hard-earned money.

Donated flesh, donated blood, your dog, your best gourmet food?

You can even cut out part of your liver and it will grow back.

Speaking of cashless, in the past, in Walmart, I’ve avoided the self checkout counters like the plagues — maybe had used them twice in five years. Always paid with cash.

Last week I was in a hurry and decided to use self checkout because the lines were so long. Started to check out with my ONE ITEM, and saw the sign that cash isn’t accepted any more; only cards are accepted. I left my item and walked out.

We almost never use plastic and being forced to do it is extremely piss worthy.

Judging by the quality of coins minted lately I thought they had outsourced coin production to Chucky Cheese.

I’ve seen no local sign of any coin shortage.

I got banned from Nextdoor or disagreeing with a foreigner begging for change. As he said, it was for his Chevron stations.

Self-checkouts at Walmart only stop taking cash for very short durations for routine reasons.
