Holland's position is based on assessments by the Outbreak Management Team, a group of experts advising the government. It first ruled against masks in May and has re-evaluated the evidence several times, including again last week.
It believes they detract from a clear three-pronged message that has kept deaths from coronavirus down to less than half the rate in Britain: wash hands regularly, maintain social distancing of 1.5 metres and stay at home if suffering any symptoms.
The one exception outside of the medical frontline has been on public transport, where masks are mandatory on the basis it is difficult to stay apart on crowded buses, ferries and trains. 'We have seen this approach works,' said Christian Hoebe, a professor of infectious diseases in Maastricht and member of the advisory team. 'Face masks should not be seen as a magic bullet that halts the spread.
'The evidence for them is contradictory. In general, we think you must be careful with face masks because they can give a false sense of security. People think they're immune from disease or stop social distancing. That is very negative.'
Hoebe, head of infectious disease control in Zuid-Limburg, the region hit hardest when the pandemic struck Holland, pointed to a Norwegian study showing 200,000 people must wear surgical masks for one week to stop a single Covid-19 case.

Not relevant. That is a false argument.
Are you willing to pick up dropped masks with your bare hands? How about wear one once it has been dropped...notwithstanding the other germ issues.
there is no need to require them on public transport if they dont work.
I don’t argue religion.
When is the last time you saw medical experts in a bio-lab that deals with viruses wearing a cloth or paper face mask?
Transcript of internal debate at the CDC:
Fauci: Hey, guess what? We did it! We finally forced them all to wear masks!
Redfield: Youre kidding?
Birx: No f**king way!
Adams: Even POTUS?
Fauci: Yes, even POTUS, he finally caved!
Birx: Cool! So Tony, what do we do now?
Fauci: First I think Ill show up at a baseball game NOT wearing one, just so I can lord it over everybody how we are the ones who are really superior to them.
Redfield: That would be AWESOME! But once youve done that what are we ever going to do to top this?
Fauci: Thats easy....goggles! Face shields!
Adams: ooooooh....I like the way you think Tony!
Fauci: Twelve hours after Im done giving my interview to
CNN the lawn and garden shelves at Home Depot are
gonna look like the toilet paper section at Target
in April.
Birx: If we can make them wear masks AND shields, why, we
can make them wear ANYTHING!
Fauci: Yes, indeed. Ankle bracelets, cowboy hats,
those silk disco shirts that went out of style in 1979, handcuffs lined with fur...
Adams: Ballgags? Please please PLEASE can we do ballgags?
Fauci: No, Jerome, no one would ever see them under the
masks.
Redfield: I know....lets make them wear their underwear
on the OUTSIDE! I saw that one in a movie once.
It was hilarious!
Birx: I dont know. Wearing my bra on the outside? The
Playtex Pretty Petite #304 clashes with most of my
scarves.
Fauci: All in favor.....
If by work, you mean provide some limited benefit in some settings, then that is correct.
By “work” I mean lessen the viral load. I also wear a face shield to help it along because I am not in an area with very few cases.
I ,in no way, believe wearing a surgical mask or even an n95 mask is going to keep out every single virus particle in every circumstance.
Heck, I am cognizant of the fact that I very likely will,at some point, do something wrong and take it off the wrong way or some other thoughtless action that could infect me.
My purpose is to lessen the viral load so my body can fight it off until such time as this virus mutates or they can come up with some medicine that has a good chance of working on me.
More power to you, as long as you dont expect me to do the same.
The six feet was a droplet spread study. It was all about percentages and six feet was chosen as a standard. Closer and you get more drops, further away you get less. A polar bear can smell your fish breath miles away.
Out kayaking yesterday I saw (what appeared to be) a father and son out fishing in separate kayaks. They were both wearing masks in the middle of the lake and no one else around. They were also fully covered from the sun. Oh well
I dont expect you to do the same..as long as you stay away from me.
I do my best to stay away from people but it is difficult. I dont need a self checkout cashier to rush within inches of me before I can escape just because the machine beeped. Let me figure it out.
When I go in home depot and lowes I tell them I will let them know if I need their assistance. At the grocery store I use the cart to block me from them rushing me
And yes, I put on a bag over my hand because those scanners are a filthy germ laden mess. I did that long before Covid.
There not saying they do not work..it is just they think people will not wash there hands and social distance...so the reward may be greater without them...plus the social benifit of no masks..
How effective is the mask ???? I guess from 95% to 10% depending what your mask is???
They forgot....fart release valve. Captures the fart in a little flask attached at your waist. After a day of farting, you replace it with a new and improved fart holding bag.
The Frontline Doctors who got censored on social media addressed this.
Cloth masks are like throwing a fistful of sand at a chain link fence. Yeah, it will stop some of it. But not enough to do you any good.
N95 and above is what is actually effective, and that is impractical for the typical person to walk around with. N99 and N100 best but that’s almost a hermetically sealed suit.
They work. I dont need a government official to tell me if they do or dont.
bump
Holland is a region within the Netherlands, like a state. There are about ten of them.
For instance, Amsterdam is in North Holland, Rotterdam is in South Holland, and Arnhem is in Gelderland.
We spent a couple days there last year as part of a Rhine River cruise.
