Americans Can’t Stop Mask Debating
Kottke ^ | 7/29/20 | Jason Kottke

Posted on 07/30/2020 3:53:47 AM PDT by Libloather

A compilation of TV news clips of people saying “mask debate” (which sounds very much like another unrelated word when spoken — try saying it out loud right now to see what I mean), stitched together by the folks at Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. It feels good to laugh at infuriating things sometimes.

BTW, the actual debate over masks will continue to wane - science and then culture will win most people over and it’ll just become a normal thing that most people do in public all the time, like wearing shoes or carrying a bag.

Transcript of internal debate at the CDC:

Fauci: Hey, guess what? We did it! We finally forced them all to wear masks!

Redfield: You’re kidding?

Birx: No f**king way!

Adams: Even POTUS?

Fauci: Yes, even POTUS, he finally caved!

Birx: Cool! So Tony, what do we do now?

Fauci: First I think I’ll show up at a baseball game NOT wearing one, just so I can lord it over everybody how we are the ones who are really superior to them.

Redfield: That would be AWESOME! But once you’ve done that what are we ever going to do to top this?

Fauci: That’s easy....goggles! Face shields!

Adams: ooooooh....I like the way you think Tony!

Fauci: Twelve hours after I’m done giving my interview to
CNN the lawn and garden shelves at Home Depot are
gonna look like the toilet paper section at Target
in April.

Birx: If we can make them wear masks AND shields, why, we
can make them wear ANYTHING!

Fauci: Yes, indeed. Ankle bracelets, cowboy hats,
those silk disco shirts that went out of style in 1979, handcuffs lined with fur...

Adams: Ballgags? Please please PLEASE can we do ballgags?

Fauci: No, Jerome, no one would ever see them under the
masks.

Redfield: I know....let’s make them wear their underwear
on the OUTSIDE! I saw that one in a movie once.
It was hilarious!

Birx: I don’t know. Wearing my bra on the outside? The
Playtex Pretty Petite #304 clashes with most of my
scarves.

Fauci: All in favor.....

“Then move there”

I’ve lived there, and Thailand. We moved back in 1968, I went to work at sea out to the Carolines, Marshalls, and Gilberts. I don’t need to back out.

I’m making masks for my wife and myself out of cheesecloth with a duct tape border and yarn ear loops. We can breathe just fine through them.

Still rather not wear any mask, though. We’ve had some workers at the new place in the last few days, and we tell them as soon as they arrive that if they prefer not to wear masks, that’s fine with us. Without exception, the masks get removed.

For a mask I thought about making one, or some, out of even-weave cross-stitch Aida cloth. It’s full of holes. But it’s too expensive to waste on a godforsaken mask.

There is no evidence masks work and they may actually increase spread.

Do you actually bother to consult the medical literature before making such blanket statements? Many researchers have been examining the efficacy of face masks, and I'm sure that quite a few of them would disagree with that statement. Of course, what do they know--they're only medical researchers, and I already know that you dismiss us as a bunch of know-nothings simply because the majority of medical researchers are not trained in patient care. Out of politeness, I'll refrain from mentioning that my opinion of non-research trained MDs is that you are nothing but a bunch of glorified technicians.

If you put links to valid medical references that support your contention, I will look at them. But if all you can do is make blanket statements without any supporting documentation or evidence, then I'll just dismiss it. For your consideration:

And many other articles, including some that indicate that wearing eye protection along with a mask is even more effective.

I have read the literature. I actually practice and see patients not sit on the internet and pontificate about things I know nothing about. There is just as large a body of evidence that masks do not work which I have posted multiple places so I’m. it going to do your research for you. I see you have joined the fauci birx bandwagon. that everyone should wear face shields as well. Why don’t you go all the way and demand full biocontainment suits to go to the grocery store. For a virus with a .2% mortality rate that is endemic in the community and not going anywhere.

Oh so you are a clinician. The medical literature is actually against masks. The non medical but everyone else knows everything Pseudoscientists as to the actual efficacy of masks is equivocal. The journal of nursing is not medical literature. I can show you an equal number of studies that contradict your statements. And when the studies are in conflict there is no conclusion. Didn’t you learn that in doctoring school, Doctor? Let’s be intellectually honest something that you continue to avoid.

I’ve been concerned with the effect of this on kids ever since we “flattened the curve” three months ago. Especially of the effects on young boys watching their fathers cower before politicians, scared senseless of germs, wearing their face diaper everywhere they go, many out of work, and so forth. As raising a young boy into manhood — teaching his son with words and behavior how to behave and live as a decent, productive man — is the primary responsibility of a dad, I look at what many American “men” have devolved into over the past several months and wonder — truly wonder — what their sons will think of their father’s behavior today when they reach adulthood.

Please explain how forming opinions based on the science makes me a dem.

The Covid-19 situation is not a political issue. It is a public health issue, and having the most correct information on it is the best way to combat it.

I think the holes in cheesecloth are too big, although cheesecloth probably is absorbent enough to catch damp particles. I make masks out of cotton material, and I put pockets for filters in the masks. I get filters by cutting open vacuum cleaner bags; the inner lining of the bag is a filter. I have been trying several styles of mask.

I see you have joined the fauci birx bandwagon.

Thank you very much for affirming that what I have been saying is completely consistent with what the public health experts are saying. That verifies again that you have been spreading a story based on your personal biases and not on the science. Being a physician does NOT make you knowledgeable about scientific methodology.

For a virus with a .2% mortality rate

Where do you get these fake numbers, anyway?

The fact that you will not cite any references that support your assertions tells me everything I need to know about the validity of your claims.

FYI, today the US case count reached 4620502, with 154449 deaths. That comes out to a 154,449 / 4,620,502 x 100 = 3.343% death rate. That's a tad higher than 0.2%.

Masks won’t save anyone from anything.

Well...they MIGHT save you from being shanked or shot by a mask-wearing Karen whackjob if you AREN'T wearing a mask.

Seriously. I have never claimed to be a clinician, and I am glad I am not one, honestly. Because being a clinician apparently closes your mind to any new information that might contradict your non-scientific opinions.

If you know of a body of literature that recommends against wearing of masks--that *includes* the latest studies on mask efficacy--please post the citations and links. Otherwise, you're just making stuff up out of thin air. (Yes, I am well aware that you have a long history of doing that and have no intention to change.)

Let's see, I posted references from Nature Medicine, Science, and British Medical Journal, as well as the International Journal of Nursing Studies. These journals have, respectively, impact factors of 22.660, 37.205, 27.604, and 3.783. They are all peer-review journals. Not that I expect these metrics mean much to you, since you have made it absolutely clear from day one that you are *not* a scientist and completely disrespect the scientific method.

Clearly, the actual recent data supports mask use, hence the recent changes in recommendations and mandates to use masks. The governor of Maryland just issued a new mandate to wear masks outdoors when around other people as well as indoors. At least public officials are not as resistant to scientific recommendations as you are.
