BLM Teacher Says 2+2 Only = 4 Because of “Western Imperialism”
Brittany Marshall’s tweet went viral after she claimed during the course of a discussion about racism, “Nope the idea of 2 + 2 equaling 4 is cultural and because of western imperialism/colonization, we think of it as the only way of knowing.”
Marshall, who includes her pronouns in her bio, lists her occupation as “teacher, scholar, social justice change agent” and apparently is studying for a PhD at Rutgers.
Her bizarre statement is yet another example of Intersectionality, the pseudo-intellectual garbage feminist notion taught in all major universities that racism and sexism are prevalent throughout all areas of society and are intertwined.
In this case, Marshall appears to be arguing that maths itself is racist, an argument that has been made by numerous social justice warriors down the years, some of whom question why ‘Western Math’ is in common use and not other methods such as the way Aborigines count (maybe because we’re western and not Aborigine).
The notion that 2+2 might not = 4 is of course lifted from George Orwell’s 1984, when the one party state was able to torture dissidents into believing it could equal 5.
Respondents to the tweet expressed their varied opinions.
“Unfortunately it’s nothing new,” remarked one. “There are videos circulating showing black students promoting to stop science because it represents white supremacy. They would prefer magic and voodoo.”
“Scary thing is, this person is a teacher probably preaching the same nonsense to our children,” said another.

In the normal, democratic world we live in, it is understood that truth creates power. If we can, for instance, figure out the laws of the universe, we can harness them to help humankind flourish. If we can grasp that two plus two equals five, for example, we create systems of commerce that help people lead better lives. If we can understand the truth of how smallpox spreads, we can develop a vaccine that saves lives.
In the kind of totalitarian system Orwell describes, however, the premise that truth creates power is turned on its head. O’Brien wants Winston to understand that, according to O’Brien’s worldview, power creates truth.
In having O’Brien say that two plus two equals five, Orwell is mimicking what was going on in his time in totalitarian societies. One real life example that Hannah Arendt cites in her book On Totalitarianism is the following: Stalin made the absurd claim that the Soviet Union had the world’s only subway system. Now, clearly, anybody with one micron of knowledge knew that other countries, such as the U.S. and England, had subway systems. Stalin could make the claim, Arendt says, because he felt he had the power—or would soon have the power—to make this bizarre assertion true. After he achieved—or the Soviets achieved—total world domination, they would use their power to destroy all the other subway systems.
O’Brien is essentially communicating the same idea to Winston: power makes truth and not vice versa. Of course, this idea is false: nobody, even absolute dictators of totalitarian regimes, have been able to make truth bend to power in the long run. In the end, the material laws of the universe assert their force and win. Nevertheless, by using enough torture and brainwashing, O’Brien is able to torture and brainwash Winston into believing that two plus two is five.
