Would You Let The Government Track Your Smartphone If It Meant We Could Reopen Sooner?

Before the pandemic, the plan would have seemed like something ripped from a distant dystopian future in which the human race fully surrenders to Big Tech. On the April 10 online document, the logos of Google and Apple sat atop a description of the companies' joint plan to enable America's cellphones to keep track of everyone with whom their owners come into contact.

Who would sign on to such extensive surveillance? Much of the world already has. In South Korea, health officials use apps and video cameras to track down people who came into contact with COVID-19 patients before symptoms appeared. China, Singapore and Australia already have phone-based contact-tracing in place, and much of Europe is following suit. The UK's National Health Service, for instance, has endorsed a scheme that's undergoing a pilot test, and Germany's government is close behind.

As U.S. governors consider how to open up and allow people to go back to work, experts warn that the coronavirus, which is still in circulation, is almost certain to flare up again. To avoid more emergency-room disasters like the one that overwhelmed New York City in April, public-health officials must act aggressively to stop small outbreaks before they develop into big ones. The key, experts say, is contact tracing. For each new COVID-19 case, health care workers would develop a list of people the patient might have interacted with before symptoms developed. Then they would contact each one and recommend self-quarantine.

Or would wrapping it in tinfoil work?

I've tried that, and attempted to call from another phone. No response.

Am I supposed to believe that they’re not doing this already?

(I just got an email from Google showing me where I was in April.)

No. And besides tracking your whereabouts, soon apps will be mysteriously added tracking your temperature and overall health.

Citizens just need to take it upon themselves to re-open the country. The guidelines are not laws, and it seems that most people, even many FReepers, aren’t aware of that. Private businesses can choose to make their own guidelines, and that’s fine. Otherwise, ignore the guidelines like masks outdoors, etc.

Nah. I would prefer mass distributions of HCQ, Z-pacs, Zinc, remdesevir, etc. That’s the most non-intrusive way to go, in addition to contact tracing, which, as far as I know, can still be done through disclosures over the telephone.*

What a headline. To put it another way.....

Would you let the government take away your freedom in order to give you more freedom?

I just got a couple Faraday pouches for our phones. Mine is in airplane mode much of the time, as well.

Say, can those envelopes that toll tags come in be used for Faraday pouches. We’re really in a pickle here: if we don’t take our phones, there won’t be many other people out and about to help us in an emergency. If we do take them, then governors such as the embittered L who runs Kansas can track our comings and goings.

I don’t know about toll tags. Is the material metallicized plastic, like what a new hard drive is wrapped in? If so, then yes. Just test it by putting the phone is the sleeve and have someone call or text that number.

They already have that capability.

On Tuesdays and Fridays my Garmin has me set up on my route and I have NOT preplanned it (I think...ha ha).

Weird part was one Wed a few weeks ago I took my truck to the shop and had another appt scheduled two weeks later and damned if I don’t crank her up WED AM and it had me plotted to the shop. I KNOW I DID NOT PREPLAN THAT.
And same thing again this last week.

I will definitely go down and crank her up THIS coming WED and see what it shows.....HA...

When on long trips I will sometime make a wrong turn so I can get a chance to ‘talk’ to my GPS.

Ever notice how the 3rd time they tell you something that the voice is sounding irritated??? GUESS that is the way WE sound when telling someone something the 3rd time and we (at least I) hear the voice that way.

I ‘love’ those that are sitting someplace and will ‘tell’ the GPS to find them the nearest ???? and are happy when ‘it’ does so.

BUT at the end of the month when ‘they’ send you a report of where you had been, ‘THEY’ accuse it of tracking you...WELL???
