Silent hypoxia: Covid-19 patients who should be gasping for air but aren’t

(CNN)In hospitals around the world, doctors are shaking their heads in disbelief as they watch Covid-19 patients who should be comatose or “seizing” from hypoxia — a lack of oxygen in the body’s tissues — check social media, chat with nurses and barely complain of discomfort while breathing....

...patients come into the emergency room with blood oxygen levels as low as 50%, so low they should have been incoherent, even unconscious. Normal blood oxygen saturation is between 95% and 100%, and anything below 90% is considered abnormal.

In addition, Levitan said, scans of these patients’ lungs showed signs of pneumonia so severe they should be in terrible pain as they gasp for their next breath..

...A silent hypoxia that progresses rapidly to respiratory failure may explain why some younger Covid-19 patients with no underlying health conditions have died suddenly after not experiencing any serious shortness of breath.

CRUISE SHIPS

Cruise passengers have gone home, but the crews that looked after them are still stuck at sea

As of May 5, there were over 57,000 crew members still aboard 74 cruise ships in and around US ports and the Bahamas and the Caribbean, according to the US Coast Guard. Many more hundreds were stuck on vessels elsewhere across the world’s oceans.
With no passengers to look after and their quarantines completed, the employees are left wondering why they haven’t been allowed home.
In American waters, cruise ships have been mired in regulations imposed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the US health protection agency.

honestly, people have got to start asking..can the CDC manage any operation successfully?

LOS ANGELES - Homeless

LA city council votes to name hotels that refuse to house homeless, may ‘commandeer’ them

The Los Angeles City Council Wednesday voted to identify hotels refusing to take in the homeless during the coronavirus pandemic and said they could possibly be “commandeered.”

Only 1,582 people have been placed in hotels, far short of the city’s goal of housing 15,000, FOX 11 in Los Angeles reported....

“If hotels are making a distinction among people classifying housed and unhoused differently in terms of accommodations that they’re going to be repaid for, that the city and county will pay for with reimbursements, then I think there’s a potential civil rights violation,” Councilman Mike Bonin said. “If the problems are on the hotel end, the public should know why, and then we should consider commandeering as they’ve talked about in other cities.”

The council also plans to investigate if hotels refusing to house homeless have received tax breaks from the city recently.

I believe some were asymptomatic at the time. A few were rushed to the hospital. I haven’t heard if anything changed since then.

NYC

Former NYPD commissioner bashes de Blasio over ‘atrocious,’ ‘outrageous’ bid to enforce social distancing

“I think it’s atrocious. I think it’s outrageous that the mayor would put the cops, the men and women in law enforcement in a position to do this,” Kerik said, adding that the order “contradicts everything you want to think about with regard to community relations.”...

...”I think the mayor forgets [that] the mayor is responsible for New York City,” he said. “Not the president, the mayor.” Kerik noted that former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani kept a plaque on his desk that read “I’m responsible,”....

“[Giuliani] had to prepare for the crisis. He had to work on the response, the rescue, the recovery, the investigation ... not just calling out the president and saying ‘You will give me this,’” Kerik said...

Kerik added that too many political leaders don’t feel the same accountability when they order extensive lockdowns and business shutdowns, specifically calling out New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, a former Goldman Sachs employee with a net worth of millions of dollars.

“[He] doesn’t give a damn about the people in New Jersey that have to live paycheck to paycheck,” Kerik said of Murphy, adding, “these mayors and governors are breaking people — mentally, financially, professionally.”

Doctors rush to understand COVID-19’s second-week crash

...Doctors have now described alarming situations in which patients with COVID-19 suddenly and inexplicably become critically ill around the eighth day after being infected with the virus.

... Doctors, however, aren’t sure why the second week seems to be particularly dangerous for some with COVID-19.
“It’s one of those bizarre things because it doesn’t follow any trajectory of what we know in medicine,” said Dr. Sampson Davis, an emergency medicine physician at several New Jersey hospitals....

...While it’s clear there are numerous causes of the second-week crash, doctors still can’t predict which of their patients will crash. Age may play a role, but crashes are occurring in young patients as well. Patients with underlying medical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes and obesity seem to be at higher risk.

Nevertheless, doctors are taking action, instituting new precautions to prevent the second-week crash...

Dr. Roger Seheult

Coronavirus Pandemic Update 67: COVID-19 Blood Clots - Race, Blood Types, & Von Willebrand Factor

Dr. Seheult continues his review of journals and illustrates more of the possible pathway for blood clot (thrombosis) formation in COVID-19. See how oxidative stress of the endothelium (lining of the blood vessels), Von Willebrand factor, racial differences, and blood types may have a significant effect on COVID-19 severity and fatality rates.

Of Note: a paper was mentioned in the comments, with this summary: “...decreased ADAMTS13 contributes to coagulation. Here is some research showing that Vitamin D “up-regulated ADAMST13 expression” in an in-vitro study. “

I think it’s been posted to the thread some time back but just in case a refresher

I discovered that Twatter actually locked my account for “encouraging violence” or “disparaging people” base on race, ethnicity, etc. because I made a reply to one of Jennifer Rubin’s idiot comments by saying that “our 401(k)’s would rise again, provided that our governments don’t go FULL RETARD STATIST! You never go FULL RETARD STATIST!”

Apparently, I struck a nerve with somebody. Funny as heck! I deleted the tweet, figuring it had enough views — it was from March 20 — so I could check out Dr. Williams’ tweet.

And, that Robert Downey Jr. movie — I think it’s named “Tropic Thunder” — is right out, I guess.

Dr. Fauci to Chris Cuomo: I don’t think people realized how you were sucking it up

Fauci fawns over Chris Cuomo, who bragged that Fauci was the last person he talked to each night.

I’d like to know when Cuomo is going to receive a bill for the time a govt employee was monopolized by Cuomo’s feeling he’s entitled to have the top NIAID scientist on speed-dial.

Didn't read the article - but Walla Walla is a college town, so guessing it was young folks making up a “good” reason to party.

It is also the site of a maximum security prison with all of Washington States death row inmates. Although after Washington State did not pursue the death penalty for Gary Ridgway, serial killer, I doubt any of those already on death row will ever be executed.

Perhaps the warden could arrange for a Covid-19 party?

Good, then healthcare workers can re-wear their gowns, hats and flimsy masks again on day 2 or maybe their next shift.

Lots of interesting tweets there—I found that “social distancing” poll interesting—only 11% opposed social distancing.

So—I think it is fair to consider the FluBros kooks.

The “open economy” that they harangue about will not work with even a mild form of social distancing in place.

the hypothesis of COVID 19, as methemoglobin, where COVID 19 virus structural protein, sticks to heme – displaces oxygen – which alters the iron-free ion, that leads to inflammation of alveolar macrophages which culminate to the systemic response ending in a cytokine storm. They suggested that free radical’s scavengers and iron-chelating agents if are added to the protocol of management might ameliorate the inflammatory response.

IOW, some lab rat created this particular behavior of the virus. No wonder China killed the doctors who tried to warn the world. If those brave doctors and nurses hadn't said a thing and videos hadn't gotten out, we'd never know what hit us.

Perhaps it lingers in the system for years and can pop back up like Ebola.
