A Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) aircraft went down in Lake Sentani Tuesday morning, resulting in the Pilot’s loss of life.
The Kodiak airplane, PKMEC, departed from the international airport in Sentani at 6:27 a.m. Shortly after take-off an emergency was declared by Captain Joyce Lin and the Kodiak went down into the lake. The pilot was the only person on board the cargo flight to Mamit.
The downed plane was spotted by area aircraft and small boats in the area responded to the location. A full-scale rescue operation was quickly initiated by local authorities. The Indonesia Search and Rescue recovered the body.
Mike Brown, Program director for MAF’s Papua program said, “We are greatly saddened by the loss of our colleague and friend in this tragic accident. We will be fully cooperating with local authorities and the DGCA in the investigation of this accident.”
