TREATMENT TRIALS - SoCal

Leaked remdesivir results shows promise, helping Southern Californians with coronavirus

The anti-viral drug remdesivir outsmarts the coronavirus.
Posing as the one of the building blocks the virus needs to make copies of itself, it’s incorporated into the virus’s genome — stopping it from reproducing and essentially shutting it down in its tracks, research has found.

Developed by the Bay Area’s Gilead Sciences in 2014 to fight Ebola — which it didn’t do very well — remdesivir has been pressed into service to battle the SARS and MERS coronaviruses effectively. And now, trials involving thousands of patients at hospitals across the nation suggest it may be a potent treatment for COVID-19 as well.

https://www.dailynews.com/2020/04/20/anti-viral-drug-can-stop-coronavirus-from-reproducing-studies-suggest/

also from the link:
A dozen hospitals across Southern California have enrolled — and are recruiting — patients for the trials, including Kaiser Permanente medical centers in Anaheim, Downey, Fontana, Harbor City, Los Angeles, Moreno Valley, Ontario and Panorama City; Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center; Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach; St. Joseph Hospital of Orange; and Providence St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica.

Lots and lots of repatriation flights starting April 1 that we never hear about on MSM, because, why print good news, right? lol

Could also be a big factor. Thanks, I had forgotten about those repatriation flights.

CALIFORNIA - Los Angeles - Essential worker testing

“Starting tomorrow, health care professionals, grocery store workers, first responders and critical government personnel can get a test even if you don’t have symptoms,” Garcetti said. “We wish we could open that up to everybody, but I think we all know that we have firefighters and police officers, doctors, nurses, janitors at hospitals, folks that are in grocery stores and pharmacies that are putting themselves out on the line and we want to make sure that they are healthy.”

Re: 383:

"I guess it takes temperatures in the upper 90s to kill the coronavirus."

This has some additional info:

"Stability of SARS-CoV-2 in different environmental conditions"
- see https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2666524720300033?via%3Dihub

and the Supplementary appendix is here:
https://ars.els-cdn.com/content/image/1-s2.0-S2666524720300033-mmc1.pdf

If you refer to Table A., at 37C, after 1 day the virus titer has decreased almost 50% from the value recorded after 1 hour. After 2 days, the virus titer was undetectable.

Please note this research was in controlled conditions so as normalize data as much as possible. So, the results in the "real world" would be different as to the titer that is measured.

Well, true.

They’re hardly endangered here though. Eat up my garden? Pay the penalty!

Well, it damn well ought to be.

Actually, intentionally infecting people with a virus wasn't "a thing" until HIV, thus specific laws against it were not really required. Obviously, anything you do to intentionally harm another person, including infecting them with a dangerous virus, is prosecutable under the law, up to murder. Plenty of people who are infected with HIV and Hepatitis C have been given lengthy prison terms for spitting in peoples faces. Up to 35 years. A few far left states like California have passed laws to protect people infected with HIV who knowingly expose a person. Maybe this poster identifies with those people who infect others with AIDS. It's a right ya know, just like spreading COVID-19.

Coronavirus In Minnesota: Police Will Let Nurse Continue To Live In Parked RV To Protect Family From COVID-19

...Lisa Neuburger, an ICU nurse at Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville, has been living in a camper in a family member’s driveway...

...Living in a camper is technically against city ordinance in St. Paul Park. After police received a complaint about it, Neuburger’s in-laws — the owners of the home — were sent a written notice that they had two weeks to fix it.

WCCO spoke with St. Paul Park Police Chief Jessica Danberg, who says she’s going to make an exception and allow Neuburger to continue living in the camper.

https://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2020/04/21/coronavirus-in-minnesota-police-will-let-nurse-continue-to-live-in-parked-rv-to-protect-family-from-covid-19/

stories like this make me mad, because all Mrs or Mr. Cravetts had to do was walk the dog or whatever, make some small talk and find out, yes, it’s a nurse staying there. Instead they pick up the phone and complain. Not very neighborly.

Be careful how you clean in the fight against coronavirus, CDC says
The increased use of cleaning products has meant a jump in poison control calls.

.

Though people of all ages reported increased cleaning agent exposure to poison centers, children under 6 made up the highest proportion of exposures — nearly 50%. ...

“Using cleaning wipes and other cleaning solutions on the skin causes severe irritation,” said Dr. Moss of the last of the three most common poison center calls. “Instead, use hand soap or hand sanitizer only, and apply lotion to help treat dry skin,” he recommended.

Toxicologists are seeing a rise in people intentionally cleaning their bodies with harsh products not meant to be used on the skin, resulting in painful rashes and burns. Furthermore, experts plea for people to stop taking unproven “natural” and “COVID cure” remedies at home, as ingestion can be lethal.

“We have seen people die after ingesting aquarium products,” said Dr. Heise. “Ingestion of hydrogen peroxide — touted as a prevention measure on social media — is dangerous and may be deadly, especially at concentrated solutions. Even with very small ingestions, something as seemingly innocent as baking soda, when ingested in an excess amount, has killed individuals.”

the Tide Pod kids strike again. This time? Drinking hand sanitizer.

Once some states start “opening up” it will be interesting to see the effects after a few weeks....your totals may be in the ballpark while the states numbers have very significant up movements (in the “free” states) and down movements in the “slave” ;-) states.

‘we’ are opening up monday.

It’s why ‘we’ are restocking this week/weekend.

Even if hubby has to go back in to the office, we will avoid unnecessary trips elsewhere and be germed on.

PERU -

In Peru, bodies mount and masks are reused with region’s second highest coronavirus cases
“We have to use three masks throughout the month, so we re-use,” said a nurse. “Where I work, colleagues have caught the disease.”

LIMA, Peru—Peru’s hospitals are straining to deal with a rapid rise in the number of COVID-19 infections, with bodies being kept in hallways, masks being repeatedly reused, and protests breaking out amongst medical workers concerned over their safety.
Peru has the second highest number of cases in South America after Brazil, despite a tough lockdown aimed at halting the spread of the coronavirus.

Confirmed numbers have risen sharply in recent days, passing 17,000 on Tuesday, double the figure from just one week ago. Almost 500 people have died.

“This is a sacrifice,” the district’s public information officer said. “They will be away from their families for three weeks.” …

..The program is aimed at keeping employees safe from COVID-19, and to insure the utility’s services remain operational during the pandemic, officials announced on Wednesday.
Thirty-two employees have volunteered to work 12-hour shifts every day for 21 days, Robert Schettler, the district’s public information officer, told City News Service.

Makes complete sense.

And it’s something that, largely, wasn’t required in 1918.

While I strongly sympathize with the people that are suffering there, I can’t help but think “if you don’t want a third-world HCS, don’t have a third-world country.” :(

I know it is not the fault of the people there for the most part - it is the fault of the culture that allows a corrupt or inefficient government to stay in power. They could do so much better if they would change their system. But they won’t. Sigh.

I guess when we’re far enough along saving ourselves, we can go save them, too.

Not unexpected. Services will not be allowed to fail, even if that means sequestering the people that maintain them.

They will have to do this with food supply people, too. They will probably figure that out soon.

Rabbit is my favorite meat. It's all I bother to hunt. My .22LR rifles are tack drivers. 32 hairs behind the eye. I take two plastic bags in the field. 1 for meat, 1 for pelt. I dress them in the field separating meat/pelt/entrails. Mine are usually oven baked with a sage bread dressing in the body cavity.

In my grad school immunology class, we used lab rabbits to generate antiserum for a variety of antigens. If it wasn't a human pathogen, the rabbit was permitted for food after the final exsanguination. At that point in time, my skill at doing cardiac punctures to draw blood was pretty good. I never lost a bunny. One of my fellow students made a pin cushion of a bunny. It screamed, peed on the table and died. What antigen? Beef heart extract. Dinner! Grain fed lab rabbit is excellent.

I haven't gone turkey hunting, but we have LOTS of wild turkeys around Pocatello (surrounding mountains). I'll have to avail myself of a wild bird soon.

How to Clean Your Car to Reduce the Spread of the Coronavirus

...We suggest spending extra time on the steering wheel. According to carrentals.com, a steering wheel can have four times the amount of germs found on an average toilet seat. For this reason, we would suggest using disinfecting wipes to clean all the surfaces on the steering wheel.

What not to use
We would advise against using any type of bleach or hydrogen peroxide on the vehicle’s interior. Both chemicals can put a welcome end to the coronavirus, but they will also cause damage to the vinyl and plastics used in most modern vehicles today. Under no circumstances should you use any ammonia-based cleaning products.

On airlines, it’s the headrest and magazine pocket. In cars, it’s the steering wheel.

Many small business owners say coronavirus aid may not spark additional hiring

Seems to me that there's this complicating little factor of needing to be open to have a reason to hire anyone.

Who's going to hire someone for a business which currently has no customers?
