Cave paintings of the Spanish Altamira Cave and the French Lascaux Cave, to the Hurrian Hymns from "Music of the Ancient Sumerians, Egyptians, and Greeks." They're around 17,000 years old.

This was one of my favorite parts of the Ancient Art class. Because the caves were becoming damaged, the authorities moved tourists from the real cave to a replica cave. There's one replica cave for Altamira, and three for Lascaux. In all cases, the art of the modern copyists loses compared to the originals.

Thank you, mairdie!

When I was a child I saw the Lascaux cave. Interesting music.

Absolutely awed. What can you remember of the experience?

Don’t remember the name of the instrument, but did read that they dug up a wind instrument in Lascaux.

Big dark cave with cave like atmosphere, and the ancientness of the paintings. Saw many ancient things and places in those 2 years. Changed my life.

Thanks, Gnu. You, too. We turned the house into a grocery store, so we’re fine.

My niece is stranded in CA with her parents, but I think that’s a wonderful thing as she’d never get to spend so much time with them otherwise. Thanks, jeremiah. At least you won’t get overwhelmed with visitors.

Hurrian Hymns

What’s the rush?

Because the hymns are written on baked clay tablets and their arms get tired.

I look at these cave paintings, tens of thousands of years old; then I look at my house, repainted about 7 years ago. I am asked to believe that my house paint is the latest in a high tech, modern world. Those cave paintings were done by ignorant savages in a pre-historic age. Notwithstanding, I wish I could get the savages to come paint my house. :^/

I'm not down with the "savages" remark -- they had the sophistication to create their art in places under the Earth that were (and still are) difficult to reach and difficult to illuminate without asphyxiating themselves. And they didn't try to foist it off on everyone regardless if they could appreciate it. ;^)

Too right! And we hear about the Egyptians digging deep warrens in the Valley of the Kings with elaborate art and plaster work, but never hear about the fact that there is no suet from torches on the walls or ceilings - hundreds of feet underground.
