Online calculator shows how much food you need for a 14-day quarantine so you can stop panic buying

We've been through the drill and we know that there is no risk of Singapore running out of food during this coronavirus pandemic.

Even with much assurance, people are still running helter-skelter to the nearest supermarkets to stock up on food essentials at the slightest rumour (or misinformation), causing unnecessary panic buying and hoarding.

Should you be stocking up? As PM Lee posted on his Facebook page, "buy just what you need". Should you require to serve a stay-home-notice or self-quarantine, 14 days worth of essential will tide you over. Anything over that is considered hoarding.

To help you gauge what 14 days of food amounts to, Polish startup Omni Calculator has created an online calculator, especially for this time of coronavirus, to let you know how much food to get if you're going to be on self-quarantine.

It starts by having you fill up the number of household members and the number of days you'll be in self-quarantine.

If you've been mass buying packets of rice, according to the calculator, two adults (one male and one female) will only require 2.4kg of rice — and that's if you eat it every day.

There are also other food items such as fruits and vegetables, frozen and canned food, as well as perishable items.

That's not to say you should be buying all of it. Instead, purchase only the items that you frequently use at home to avoid food wastage.

There's even a toilet paper calculator, but there's absolutely no reason to stockpile on these as it is just part of your FOMO (fear of missing out) reflex, experts explained.

And now the Family understands why I am always trying to stockpile Potable H2O in 2 & 3 liter size soda bottles and 1.75L Liquor bottles (they are much sturdier than soda bottles) with a few drops of CL2 (Chlorine) in each. Everyone thought I was crazy and several other things, UNTIL NOW !!! Not sure if they are completely on board yet but learning.

All OTC Meds and All the Rx quantity that’s possible. And First Aid Kits (and not just a few bandaids either.)

Food, same thing. Stockpile Canned everything, Dried goods like Pastas, Beans & other Legumes, Fruits, Nuts, Critter Food (Dogs in My World),Butter, Milk powder & the liquid survival type, Sweetened Condensed, Evaporated, powdered drink mixes, beer, Liquor assortment, soups, Staples like: Flour- A/P, Bread, Wheat, Yeast in bulk (I’ve seen several FReepers in the last week that were either out or couldn’t find in store), Sugar in 25/50 pound bags (it’s way cheaper that way), Brown Sugar, Chocolate Chips, Vanilla in Big bottle and then get small ones to top up the big one, Salt of all types and lots of it. Anything else that You and Yours might like.

All Paper Products, lighters both pocket and extended types, Diapers, Wipes, Bleach or better yet Pool Shock in Liquid Form to dilute down to bleach strength, soaps...

Ammunition and Firearms, even Ammunition that may not be for any Firearms You have because it’s ALWAYS good to have for Trade/Barter.

And remember any and all items are trade/barter options.

“Dried goods like Pastas, Beans & other Legumes, Fruits, Nuts, “

I’ve got 40 lbs of couscous/black lentils/green lentils/split pea. Another 30 lbs of dried fruits and nuts.

Look up www.ifsbulk.com

They ran outta beans or I’d have another 30 lbs.

Does the calculator tell you how much you will need when the authorities won’t even tell you how long the quarantine is going to be, as is now the case in Pennsylvania?

14 days? Amateur “preppers” have 3 months worth. Real preppers have at least a year of food, medications, toiletries yes TP too, 24 month stabilized liquid fuel for the genrac for at least a month of 2 hours a day to keep the freezers below freezing even better if you have a dual fuel genrac with natural gas grid tie in. To give an idea the volume of a years for for 2 adults and 2 adolescents it’s roughly the cubic footage of a single car garage stacked floor to ceiling with a walk way between the shelving units. 2 months of frozen food is 15 cubic feet of freezer space or one 5 & 10 cf freezers. 6 months should be the bare minimum any family keeps for the times of tribulations.

If people want the best guide on preparation I suggest the Later Day Saints guide I won’t post the link but Google can get you there. Yes I am Mormon and all of the above is everyday life for us. GOD bless and stay safe.

You were always right to stockpile and never let the ‘grasshoppers’ of the world tell you differently.

I discovered my prepping has holes in it and will use this experience to up my game.

Nicely done.

Will check it out, Thank You. Part of the problem here is “picky eaters” I’ve told Them several times if you get hungry enough you’ll eat just about anything.

We get bags and bags of rice, cans of Chickpeas every time we go to the Christian Mission Pantry. Again I’m good with that either learn to prepare it so you like it, Shut Up and Quit Bitching and eat it anyway or trade it. There’s times that They get really great things donated. The most recent things have been: Cases of Upstate NY Apples, Cases of California Oranges and frozen Blueberries as many as you want (they must have gotten a Box Train Car or a 53’ Semi Box because that was last Nov/Dec and still passing them out) I don’t know what We would do without The Mission helping Us.

Just in case the power goes out in these trying times, or you don’t have or need an on line situation, if you have a sun driven calculator, or batteries, use this:

https://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/harris-benedict-equation/

This formula sprang from a study by James Arthur Harris and Francis Gano Benedict, which was published in 1919 by the Carnegie Institution of Washington in the monograph A Biometric Study Of Basal Metabolism In Man. A 1984 revision improved its accuracy. Mifflin et al. published an equation more predictive for modern lifestyles in 1990. Later work produced BMR estimators that accounted for lean body mass.

And remember, your existing weight and exercise level could easily change daily or more depending on what you do. So the equation can be used often to closely track and modify needs. It doesn’t set goals, it doesn’t tell you what to eat or when, it establishes a level of consuming based upon a number of factors independent of you, not a functioning group. To lose weight safely, you should not cut the final calorie intake by more than 500 calories. And if you increase your exercise, adjust. You might be surprised how many calories you really can consume.

But think about what. A Big Mac from MacDonald’s is approximately 560 calories. There are 140 calories in 1 serving of Olive Garden Garden-fresh Salad with Dressing. Choose wisely Indiana Jones. You can eat a lot more salad, bang for your buck, than you can the lunch sandwich. And it has a lot more health benefits in the long run. (Roughage to start with..uh..end with)

Good luck. And remember, it’s not how you look as that is artificial, it’s how you feel. And that’s both your energy level and health, and what you think of your success. Most people don’t look like Rachel McLish or Arnie. They look like themselves, just healthy I hope.

I know, it became a hide and seek thing for a while. I finally started stashing things in the MIL’s Room because She understood being a Great Depression Child.

I left out some stuff in My Post List like Baking Powder and Baking Soda, Cocoa Powder, Vegetable Shortening are just a few. (Shortening is good for Baking and in a Deep Frier or Dutch Oven when it cools back down it’s easily transported without any spills.)

If everyone is bummed out and down in the dumps I’ve found that whipping up some Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookies in a Cast Iron Frying Pan will perk up just about anyone.

Yes I noted several Medical Supplies like Coban ©️™️®️ and Surgical Masks. In fact one of My Homecare Nurses had no Masks the other day and I asked Him with or without Eye Splash Shielding ? He said that He could just tear off the Shield and I told Him no I’ll give You just a Mask. I had 2 with Eye Shield and 3 Masks when I started looking. I was sure I had more of each but couldn’t find any more than the 5. Might be in another box I’ve got to look in

Our county was the first in PA to have restrictions imposed upon it. We are up around 900 cases now, but it's been creeping up rather than skyrocketing. When you look at the projections for Pennsylvania (assuming they're sort of correct) the good news is that we seem to have enough hospital beds and nearly enough ICU beds for our projected peak. The bad news is that this thing is dragging on and on. The projected death rate finally drops to zero around Memorial Day weekend. The projections are built with the assumption of full social distancing through May. I suspect we are living with these restrictions until the end of May. Governor Wolf isn't shy about imposing restrictions. You'll need a good supply of food and household goods.

The death rate will never drop to zero, especially with the stats being manipulated to increase the apparent death rate. The restrictions need to be lifted well before then. April 30th is the red line. But Commissar Wolf's agenda does not allow for that. The people are doing a slow burn right now. If the lockdown goes into May, there will trouble, and an easily predictable police state response.

Yeah, I know. I take it all with a grain of salt. Our son works in an ER. He’s very tired and stressed but he doesn’t tell us much about what he’s seeing. Volume is down because people aren’t coming in with trivial stuff but nearly everyone has to go into isolation, which is more work for them. They have inadequate PPE, and he assumes he’s continually exposed. He doesn’t know too much about any COVID cases in his workplace because they don’t really tell the workers. I expect between HIPPA and morale they don’t want to say too much. It is hard to tell the truth of what is happening.
