New York States long-feared surge of coronavirus cases has begun, thrusting the medical system toward a crisis point.
In a startlingly quick ascent, officials reported on Friday that the state was closing in on 8,000 positive tests, about half the cases in the country. The number was 10 times higher than what was reported earlier in the week.
In the Bronx, doctors at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center say they have only a few remaining ventilators for patients who need them to breathe. In Brooklyn, doctors at Kings County Hospital Center say they are so low on supplies that they are reusing masks for up to a week, slathering them with hand sanitizer between shifts.
Some of the jump in New Yorks cases can be traced to significantly increased testing, which the state began this week. But the escalation, and the response, could offer other states a glimpse of what might be in store if the virus continues to spread. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Friday urged residents to stay indoors and ordered nonessential businesses to keep workers home.
State officials have projected that the number of coronavirus cases in New York will peak in early May. Both the governor and Mayor Bill de Blasio have used wartime metaphors and analogies to paint a grim picture of what to expect. Officials have said the state would need to double its available hospital beds to 100,000 and could be short as many as 25,000 ventilators.
As it prepares for the worst-case projections, the state is asking retired health care workers to volunteer to help. The city is considering trying to turn the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan into a makeshift hospital.

Well considering that I am a critical care physician and I see what is happening in my locale, I think that I can just interview myself and determine that at this moment, all my hospitals are empty and ICU is about 25% filled. I am a local doctor. And my colleagues the local nurses are also rolling their eyes. But thanks for asking and assuming.
Let's see what happens tomorrow, Sunday and Monday when there are no more available ventilators.
Who wishes it were the black death?
Nope. Lab leak. Poor bio discipline.
Something like this could be a game changer. Not only in the case mortality rate. If it reduces the hospital stay from 14-21 days to just 5 days, like the French 40 person study showed, that significantly reduces the pressure on hospitals as the beds free up faster.
My son said the same about the hospital in Austin. They're turning them away because they have no symptoms. It's crazy what mass hysteria will do.
I wouldnt trust IL at all.

Worldometer has 12 people dying in the entire state, from 8pm Thursday to 8pm Friday.
Glad I tickled your funny bone. Laughter is the best medicine
You were talking about NY, not South Korea,
I’m “Bat Soup” Clazy!
.
Otherwise it’s
Weaponized!
.
Take Out?
“Yet Lennox Hill hospital in NYC reported yesterday that they have treated a 100+ in patients with Hydroxychloroquine and not one death.”
Yes, but those were relatively new infections. It might take a few weeks for patients to die. The death toll now is increasing rapidly.
You are welcome to look at the two posts I have made of extensive data analysis — but thanks for playing
Media-generated FEAR is causing people to inundate hospitals. Around here, in an industrial area where a vast number of people have gold-plated insurance, they visit the hospital for the sniffles as a normal behavior. You BET they’re inundating them now.
President Donald Trump talked up use of the antimalaria drug to treat patients who have the novel coronavirus, and FDA commissioner Stephen Hahn said that while chloroquine has been approved for other indications, it would still need to go through clinical trials.
How many people will die while the Foot Dragging Administration dithers and hesitates?

Those who have seen that old movie From Here to Eternity may remember that when Pearl Harbor was being attacked the sergeant in charge of the armory didnt want to issue weapons and ammunition because the soldiers didnt have the proper forms. The soldiers just pushed the idiot aside and took the weapons they needed to fight back.
All physicians on the front lines need to simply do the same...push around any UNAVAILABLE FDA paperwork and start administering the appropriate course of Hydroxychloroquine & accompanying azithromycin.
BUREAUCRATS STEP ASIDE!
The thread is about NY.
gas_dr was pointing out that the case mortality rate is only 0.5 times there and decreasing. 0.5% is still 5 times worse than the flu, but better than the 1$-3% many have been expecting.
I used S.Korea to point out that the rate has risen over time in S.Korea not decreased.
But NYC is using Chloroquine some, so maybe their rate will go down. Lets hope so.
You people are the problem. You are the danger. You believe the fascist tactics are perfectly fine. The entire nation has shutdown over this absurd premise. May the coming depression hit your house particularly hard.
How many are illegals taking a ventilator?
If there is one vent available and it's between you and a 30 year old illegal - the younger patient will get it. Not you.
Don't believe me? It's true. Older citizens will not get care if it's between them or a younger illegal.
...Or you'll be stone dead in a moment.
