As you may or may not know, I only really started taking care of the diabetes in 2017, though I was diagnosed in 2010. Even then, my control has been kinda bad. I sometimes see a blood sugar near 300, but I am getting better.
Some of my neglect has caught up with me.
Friday morning, I noticed I was seeing double when driving. I went to the doctor for a previous appointment, unrelated to this. I didnt bother to mention this issue because it came and went, and I figured it was just eye strain or something.
Well, it got worse Saturday. My optometrist is open on Saturday, at 11AM, but I ended up calling the on-call doctor (they say to call if it is an ocular emergency. I figured this was close enough to an emergency.
So I got in touch with him, and he told me to come in right at 11AM, and that he would bump his previous persons appointment, because this is serious. I came in, he looked me over (retinas, eye movement, prescription change). When he got done he told me what has likely happened is that one or two of the 6 major nerves, or a blood vessel feeding one of the eye muscles had either a stenosis (narrowing) or aneurysm (swelling). He would be concerned if is is an aneurysm, so wed want me to get to my normal doctor)first thing on Monday in an emergency basis, and at his recommendation, to order a scan (CT or MRI) using angiogram / radioactive fluids so they can see whats going on it there. So I will need to do these things to maybe get my eyes back to normal function.
There is a bit of good news the optomologist said the prognosis for a recovery in weeks or months is pretty good, because my pupil function was perfectly okay. He told me the body will come up with new blood vessels to feed the nerve and the muscle that is in a state of palsy, and that if there is nerve damage, even that can be repaired. If it does not work out, that there are surgeries possible to repair things. Not sure that is a great option, I dont see how they could correct that.
The level of double vision is extreme when I am driving, but near-in looking at a computer screen seems to be okay. If that deteriorates, I should be able to keep going by wearing an eye patch and using one eye.
Needless to say, I am terrified. The one thing I do not want to lose is my sight.
Prayers being sent for you Laz.
Seeing double means theres more women Laz. A Cadi trunk full of prayers for you.
Im paying for you laz, your contributions are part of what makes this group great.
Dear lord, the divine doctor, guide the hands of the doctors so that they may restore sight and quality of life.
Get well soon.
Prayers ascending.
May I have your permission to put you on my church's prayer list?
And keep us informed as to how it is going.
Wishing the best for you!
I have seen diet make a difference in non-insulin dependent diabetes. And I would not arbitrarily rule-out those suggestions. God's power is limitless.
I pray God will guide and strengthen you. And that He will preserve your sight.
Good luck Homie.
Lord God, may our friend Laz be blessed with control over the illness that threatens him, and be your good and faithful servant. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Prayers!!
Laz, I’ve been following you on FR since the late 1990s. So with great respect, I implore you to research the use of carbon 60 as a treatment for your eyes.
In the final analysis, it’s your health and your eyesight. So exercise maximal due diligence.
All the best, and good luck.
Heavenly Father, we humbly beseech thee O Lord to reach down and touch with Your hand of healing Your beloved son Lazmataz. Please Lord bring healing, comfort, strength, and perseverance in patience to your son. In the eternally Blessed Name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ we pray. Amen
We’received keeping you and your peepers in our prayers, Laz.
Prayers Up!
My husband is Diabetic and has been legally blind since 2013. You must take control of your diet now and lower that 300 number to 60-100. Your A1C’s need to be between 5.5-5.8. Don’t eat pastas or rice or anything white, just whole wheat. Have oatmeal in the mornings.
It is sad when one has to take their independent, retired cop husband to the Motor Vehicle Admin. to change his driver’s license to an ID because he is no longer able to drive. This happened in Oct. 2012. Don’t let this happen to you! Change your eating habits and other life habits NOW!
Best of LUCK, Friend!
Prayers up - I had a full retinal detachment in one eye and had to consider being blind in that eye so I understand how terrifying it can be - our eyesight is the primary way of interfacing with the world.
My eye doesn’t see very well but the other is decent.
I pray for a full recovery for you.....and taking better care of yourself now that you realize the full import of handling your diabetes.
How ya gonna know if you’ll “hit it” if you can’t see it?
And becoming a meme on the 'net!
You'd have to choose from being a devilish handsome dude or merely a one-eyed fat man!
Levity aside, blindness is damned scary!
I was blinded for days after an acid tank I was inspecting had an immersed heater that blew up in it and got etchant for copper circuit boards in my eyes.
For about a week it was not known whether the eyes would heal; but - Praise GOD! - they did.
During the blackout time; my other senses kicked into overdrive to help me locate and remember where things were placed in the house.
I’m praying for you; and it looks like (from the length of this thread so far) that many of us are.
