As you may or may not know, I only really started taking care of the diabetes in 2017, though I was diagnosed in 2010. Even then, my control has been kinda bad. I sometimes see a blood sugar near 300, but I am getting better.
Some of my neglect has caught up with me.
Friday morning, I noticed I was seeing double when driving. I went to the doctor for a previous appointment, unrelated to this. I didnt bother to mention this issue because it came and went, and I figured it was just eye strain or something.
Well, it got worse Saturday. My optometrist is open on Saturday, at 11AM, but I ended up calling the on-call doctor (they say to call if it is an ocular emergency. I figured this was close enough to an emergency.
So I got in touch with him, and he told me to come in right at 11AM, and that he would bump his previous persons appointment, because this is serious. I came in, he looked me over (retinas, eye movement, prescription change). When he got done he told me what has likely happened is that one or two of the 6 major nerves, or a blood vessel feeding one of the eye muscles had either a stenosis (narrowing) or aneurysm (swelling). He would be concerned if is is an aneurysm, so wed want me to get to my normal doctor)first thing on Monday in an emergency basis, and at his recommendation, to order a scan (CT or MRI) using angiogram / radioactive fluids so they can see whats going on it there. So I will need to do these things to maybe get my eyes back to normal function.
There is a bit of good news the optomologist said the prognosis for a recovery in weeks or months is pretty good, because my pupil function was perfectly okay. He told me the body will come up with new blood vessels to feed the nerve and the muscle that is in a state of palsy, and that if there is nerve damage, even that can be repaired. If it does not work out, that there are surgeries possible to repair things. Not sure that is a great option, I dont see how they could correct that.
The level of double vision is extreme when I am driving, but near-in looking at a computer screen seems to be okay. If that deteriorates, I should be able to keep going by wearing an eye patch and using one eye.
Needless to say, I am terrified. The one thing I do not want to lose is my sight.
Prayers lifted
Laz:
First, prayers for a full recovery from this episode and from diabetes in general. Second, a family member is an emergency room physician turned nursing home medical director. A large percentage of care patients are diabetics with most having partial amputations and/or heart disease. This is a very nasty disease and one that you can not cheat on without expecting consequences. Please get with the program. Third, avoid the gatekeepers.
Best wishes.
Steady as she goes, big guy. You’ll get through this.
May I add, read all labels carefully. If it says “natural flavors” that is another name for sugars. Check also a combination of keto and paleo diet, the health benefits are real.
Adding my prayers for our Friend. Wishing you lots of success.
Prayers. As someone who struggles with type 2, it’s a hard thing to stay on top of day in and day out, all the time.
I hope it all goes well for you.
I was borderline type II for quite some time. My vision problems were controlled by limiting my sodium intake. You would be surprised at all the things that contain it. My personal limit was around 1200mg a day and it stacks up from day to day before it is eliminated. No beer and Pizza for you either, buddy. It all compounds to make your problem worse.
Greetings from the Alabama side of Columbus, Georgia. You have lots of fans here and since the good Lord hears the prayers of even sinners like us, we’ll put in a word for ya.
Try to get in more of four types of exercise:
1. Sustained exercise such as walking, bicycling, or daypack hiking where you keep it up for over an hour.
2. Fast aerobic exercise where you’re heart rate goes up to its ceiling and you break a good sweat. Running up hills and sprint biking are great.
3. Do a few miserable sit ups and push ups.
4. Find a good coordination exercise such as using a hula hoop or striking the speed bag in a good rhythm.
I’m 65 and have some knee trouble but I still run 5Ks. For further distance at lower impact I skate board with a land-paddle on the rail trail, the Fall Line Trace in Columbus. I also inline skate with 110mm Powerslide Swell tri-skates. It is low impact except when I fall and then it is very high impact.
I don’t get on much to comment anymore but I’ll comment for this...prayers for you Laz.
Prayers up!
I’ve been wondering how you’ve been doing.
See a nutritionist and set yourself up w/ a diet and KEEP IT!
When you are weak, He is strong.. prayers .
So sorry you are suffering with this health issue and worry and anxiety that accompanies it.
Rest up and know we freepers are praying with you.
Jesus, we trust in you.
Hoping the best for you.
Lazamataz—you are in my prayers for healing for your vision issues. May the Lord bless you with good medical care and an excellent outcome.
I have a dear friend who has diabetes and she is downing diet sodas by the boat load. I have been receiving e-mails from health sites that are touting the dangers of diet soda to vital organs/systems. . .not to mention weight gain.
Heavenly Father, You have a purpose for everyone of us. We pray in the precious Name of Your Son Jesus that You will direct Lazamataz and any physicians he consults in the proper diagnosis and treatment. We believe healing for Lazamataz. May this will be a time of testimony for others in his life. Thank You Lord for Your Goodness and Mercy. . .to You be All Glory and Honor. . .In Jesus Name We Pray, Amen
You are absolutely right, drop the carbs and save your blood sugar. I had a large male friend who was afraid because of his diabetes. I urged him to drop all starchy foods, and stick to protein and low carb vegetables. In six months he was off of injections and feeling a lot better. Check out Atkins Diet on Google. It has 4 phases. Induction is the first when you eat no more that 20 grams of carbs a day. Read your packages. Fresh meat, fish, fowl, and eggs have zero carbs. Leafy greens, celery, and cucumbers have almost none. Drink 2 quarts of water or seltzer a day. You will loose weight if that is something you need to do. In phase 2 you add 5 grams of carbs each day for a week and see if the weight loss remains stable. I would suggest you make those 5 grams with raw fruit. ALSO VERY IMPORTANT. If you are on injections or medication coordinate with your doctor as your need for these things will reduce as your health improves.
About your eyes. My 89 year old father had macular degeneration. I got him a blender and taught him how to make raw vegetable and fruit smoothies. Urged him to have 2 8 oz glasses a day. In four months his vision had improved significantly. Good luck and good health. ;-)
Praying for you and your sight. Let us know (when you have time) what the doctor says.
In before the air bag jokes.
Have retinopathy from diabetes. Twice had 40 laser blasts. And 1 time a shot. God speed to you. But I can say neither hurt. Keeping my sugar down greatly helps my eye. No treatments last three years
