As a pubescent teen in the 3 channel universe there were a couple of things I’d wait all year to see.

1) The swimsuit competition for Miss America and Miss Universe (which was about as much titillation as you could hope for in a house where Dad did not subscribe to Playboy).

2) Battle of the Network Stars (which was your only opportunity to see women like Lynda Carter, Farrah Fawcett and Erin Gray in similar attire).

MU Student Wins the Crown

A Columbia, Mo woman was crowned Friday night as the new Miss Missouri at the culmination of the pageant’s 15th anniversary celebration of being held in Mexico.

Esters is the daughter of Julie Fornadel of Hermitage, PA and Jeff Esters of Coconut Creek, Florida. Simone is a student at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Her platform, “Leave your MARK” focuses on mentoring youth in our state.

As Miss Missouri, she will receive a $14,000 scholarship as well as an official crown; wardrobe from the Miss Missouri Scholarship Program, Royal We, Rebekah Lane, Boston Proper, and Pink Magnolia; a fur jacket and photos from the Missouri Trapper’s Association and Fur Arts, Inc.; accessories from Melody’s Quality Jewelry; a training course; talent consultation with Bill Wolfe and more.

The runners-up were:

• First runner up: Miss Forest Park Debrielle Patee-Merrill of Maryville. She is the daughter of David and Jean Merrill.

• Third runner up: Miss Branson Chelsea Arnold of Branson. She is the daughter of Paige Schmidt.
• Fourth runner up: Miss Springfield Olivia Henson of Belton. She is the daughter of Anthony and Tricia Henson.

I remember watching the Miss America pageant parade on the Atlantic City Boardwalk in the 40s-50s ... that was v1.0. Have some great pictures, but I haven’t scanned them else I’d share.

Had two older sisters, along with my mom, so we watch ALL the pagents back in the 80s.

I was a young kid, but I swear those things were 3 hours long! It was fun to wait for your state’s lady to appear.

And when Miss Michigan won (cant remember the year) the phone was rigging for 2 hours as aunts called my mom, and my sister’s friends called to celebrate.

Such simple silly fun.

Gretchen Carlson, she of the ‘Roger Ailes is a predator’ fame, decreed that the Miss America contestants would no longer compete in ‘swimsuits’. Maybe they meant pretty swimsuits. Carlson has ruined the Miss America Pageant. I wish for her an unhappy existence as she is destroying our culture.

I did not watch the show, but I heard about a contestant who is a Christian and (based on her past comments) a Republican. I suspect some other contestants also might be Republicans.

But I didn’t hear their answers to questions. And they’re not parading around in bikinis, so the men here still wouldn’t be happy.

Whether the show is a beauty pageant or a scholarship competition makes no difference to me.
