‘Health care will keep us from going back...’ says Texas couple who retired to Spain on $2k a month

Though they ‘love America,’ this couple has chosen to put their roots down in the coastal town of Denia in Spain.

Call ‘em Texpats.

Kevin and Susan Bryant, 55 and 48, spent most of their lives in Texas, recently in retiree hot spot Austin. But “when Austin became a mini Silicon Valley, we were priced out,” Kevin, a now-retired history teacher and principal, tells MarketWatch.

History buff Kevin says he’d always wanted to live in Europe — “in a castle, specifically, but I let that part go,” he jokes — and began hunting for where the couple might retire on his educator’s pension. They considered more than a dozen countries, finally settling on Spain for a variety of reasons, including its relative affordability, good health care, and that his teacher’s pension could qualify as income to help him get residency there.

To find the right spot, they toured Spain, rejecting Barcelona because it was too big; Tarragona because it was too far north (they wanted somewhere a little warmer); and Peñiscola, because, though they liked it, Susan jokes, “I could never tell my mother I lived in a town with that name.”

Not in Texas. His is higher due to having been a principal.

Here is my educated guess of what is going on. Let's say his average salary was $80K for the last 5 years when he retired at 55. This would give him a pension of ~$46K a year. Since the retirement system offers health insurance, he and his wife are not eligible for Obamacare subsidies. The TRS insurance premiums are ~$700 per month for a couple. It looks to me like they weren't financially ready to retire, but decided to do so..

It’s a pretty sweet deal. I have a friend who has a villa in Spain. I assume he plans to retire there. The whole family speaks Spanish.

The entire point of that propaganda piece is in the headline. But they are not on the Spanish system. They pay privately.

I would not go to another country for their health care system. Ours is best.

The real reason why they are staying in Spain is the low cost of living.

Son in law is 43. Retired recently with a firefighter pension after 20 years of service. He dabbles some in the barter economy but mostly he is gone fishing.

I suspect they speak Spanish if they are living in a sleepy little town..

Yes, FedEx pays me to keep breathing! But too many grandkids in the USA to even think of living anywhere else and responsibility to the next generation is still a big deal.

Taxpayers subsidize their lifestyle.

Pensions are a ponzi scheme and we make up the shortfall.

But BernieBros want to seize retirement savings and put that ‘wealth’ in a shared collective.

“But you know, if you don’t have family, it can be quite lonely.”

Hookers are cheap............

Man, that was just...I don’t know. Just wrong. But true. Or so I heard on my 10 or 20 visits there (Navy).

Living in a rural area I don’t think people who retire at 55, etc are all that forward thinking-the only reason anyone I know retired at that age-or any other-was to open their own business-and there are people in their 80’s running their own businesses out here-money is a great motivator, as is saving it-but I wouldn’t move to Spain just to avoid having to work-my ancestors left the place over 400 years ago to do their own thing-I haven’t heard of any relatives moving back, so apparently it still isn’t appealing to us independent minded descendants of Basques...

In any case, this couple lived in Austin-which has been a carbon copy of Cali cities in expense and restrictive ordinances for at least 30 years-WTF did they expect from a place where the motto is keep Austin weird?

Call them in for jury duty every year then.

That jealous rage is really burning in your guts isn't it?........LOL!

FWIW, an expat can vote in federal elections and in some cases, state and local. If they receive a notice for jury duty, all they have to do is notify their local Jury Administrator and explain they now live outside the U.S. and they will be taken off the jury selection rolls...........

Once again, nice try......LOL!

Taxpayers subsidize their lifestyle.

So what? Consumers subsidize every company pension plan.......What's the difference? You're a consumer, aren't you?......LOL!
