Full Title: Set Your Air Conditioning to 78 Degrees During the Day, 82 Degrees at Night, Federal Agencies Recommend
Looking to beat the heat without breaking the bank? Energy Star, the federal program run by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy, has some tips — but you might not like them.
Energy Star recommends that, in order to reduce costs and energy usage, you should set your thermostat as high as comfortably possible through the summer.
Specifically, they say you should set your thermostat to 78 degrees while you’re home.
Spending the day out? Turn that thermostat up 7 degrees to 85.
Then, when you finally hit the hay, the federal program recommends setting your thermostat to 82 degrees.
They add that, if you’re using a ceiling fan, you can even turn up the temperature another 4 degrees without losing any comfort.
Oops, D-Toonland
No.
I set it to 76 (80 at night), my wife threatens to kill me - either by actually lowering it to 65, or by other means.
I work outside all summer (on laptop computer). It’s 90 right now, so 76 will be nice when I go back in.
After months of her discontent, I finally set it to 74.
We’ll resume the struggle when she finds out the heater is set to 70 (68 at night).
Growing up, bedroom got down around 56. She’ll respond by setting it to 78.
OPening a window not possible in many many areas of the United States due to criminals
Uh, no.
In general, the suggested bedroom temperature should be between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit for optimal sleep. When lying in bed trying to snooze, your body temperature decreases to initiate sleepand the proposed temperatures above can actually help facilitate this. If your room is cool, rather than warm, it will be much easier to shut your eyes for the night.
I have a hard enough problem sleeping as it is. My money, my choice.
Get bent, so called federal agencies.
In the winter...
Its like in California there are like 15 different agencies and departments telling us to use less water. How many people do we need to tell us we are using too much water? Same with electricity. They charge an arm and two legs for electric power between 5 and 8 pm. The meters have the ability to say when you use your energy and charge accordingly. If electricity being 4 times as expensive between 5 and 8 is not enough to convince you that sweating is not that bad I dont know anything. But then we have a committee of government workers sitting around discussing what temperature we should put in our thermostat.
I fully support installing a ceiling fan in every room.
Two words:
NECK SWEAT!
Let me guess. You live somewhere it gets down to below 78 at night.
We set ours at 72 at night, but it is still 76 or so upstairs until after about 2 a.m.
If we set it at 66, I have to believe the AC would never shut off, all night.
When our AC died right before the 4th of July, the bedroom was 89 for 4 nights in a row.
The first thing we need to do is make this Mandatory for ALL Federal Employee’s.
Show us How it is Done!!
humidity rises at night, 82 would be unbearable. You save more energy running cooler at night and warmer during the day.
Wow, real dingbats at energy star!
That would be another good way to get voluntary federal workforce reduction...
Yea, like I will do that. When? When every congress critter and every federal employee does it, that’s when - NOT!!!!!
I keep mine at 76-77 at all times in the summer. Period
Yep, I try to keep it around 71 during the day and night. Every month I get my power statement that compares me to my “neighborhood average” and the “efficient houses near me”. I swear my neighbors must be reptiles because there is no way my wife or I would be tolerating those kind of temperatures.
I set it how I want it, because I pay the utility bill. Screw them.
I hate a.c.. have a window a.c. in one bedroom not my bedrm. We Use fans. Yes we sweat a lot. I’m sitting in my car right now using the a.c. to escape heat. Cooler outside than in the house.

I always said there would be alot of things in life I would not be able to have, but that in the summer when I came in the house there would be air. I would pay for that.
And I totally agree with Post #4.
