An influential medical journal published a study Monday that links fluoride consumption during pregnancy with lower childhood IQsa finding that could undermine decades of public-health messaging, fire up conspiracy theorists, and alarm mothers-to-be.
The research was expected to be so controversial that JAMA Pediatrics included an editors note saying the decision to publish it was not easy and that it was subjected to additional scrutiny.
It is the only editors note Ive ever written, Dimitri Christakis, editor in chief of JAMA Pediatrics and a pediatrician, told The Daily Beast. There was concern on the journals editorial team about how this would play out in the public eye and what the public-health implications would be.
About three-fourths of the United States drinks fluoridated tap waterwhich the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declared one of the 10 greatest public-health achievements of the 20th century because it dramatically reduces tooth decay.
A handful of earlier studies have suggested that prenatal fluoride exposure could affect neurodevelopment, but many experts considered those to be substandard. The new study, vetted by the premier medical publisher in the U.S., is seen as more rigorous.
When we started in this field, we were told that fluoride is safe and effective in pregnancy, said study co-author Christine Till of York University in Toronto. But when we looked for the evidence to suggest that its safe, we didnt find any studies done on pregnant women.

The kids may be dumb, but at least they have good teeth.
No problem. Just wait a year. Another study will “prove” fluoride is safe and that this study was somehow faulty. Is coffee good this week, or not? Are eggs good this month, or not.
You get enough fluoride from your toothpaste if you brush at least once a day.
So we’ll have a population of morons with immaculate teeth.
Well, that explains a lot...................
JBS was a favorite whipping boy of the left. They still would be if there were any left around. As the old saying goes “Heavy flak usually means you are over the target.”
That explains it.
Bwahahaha....!
I used to be in charge of a public water supply system. We were not required, but strongly encouraged, to add fluoride to our water. A few years before I left the state regulators recommended we reduce the fluoride levels, which we did. The reason given for that recommendation was that people don’t need it because they get enough fluoride from other sources, especially toothpaste.
Adding fluoride to drinking water has always been controversial. I would get one or two phone calls per year from customers imploring that we stop using it.
Like so many other things, it seems the John Birch Society was right all along. Almost everything they warned about has come to fruition.

Back in the day I never read anything by the John Birch Society. I avoided it because the mainstream media said they were right wing kooks and crazy. Back then I actually trusted the medias fairness and truthfulness. Gullible me!
A couple months ago I came across old issues of their magazine. Much to my surprise, they pretty well had everything they wrote about nailed. They were Americas Casandras but we didnt listen.
One of their great long-forgotten lines about how the lefties work:
Pressure from above.
Pressure from below.
that’s because flouride ‘mimics’ iodine by attaching to the iodine receptors, blocking the absorption of iodine. low iodine causes cretinism and retardation
A long time ago a friend took me to visit them at their HQ in Belmont, MA.
They were not at all the way the media portrayed them.
The folks there were friendly, very smart, and very calm.
That was my first “hint” that the major media were lying to me.
What’s a good source of iodine?
