9 years old on the back of my pinto pony about 40 miles southeast of Graceland between Memphis and Tupelo in Holly Springs MS. My aunt came out of the house and told myself and my cousins that the King had passed.
This was a big local story. I have a cousin that was born on the same day same hospital as Lisa Marie. Her name was Lisa also.
My grandfather bought a 72 Chevy pickup that came from Elvis Horn Lake ranch. Presley had signed the title. My grandpa had willed it both to me and my first cousin. When he died in 2005 I was so busy I signed my part over to him and sadly he has just let it rust.
My mom and aunts also went to the veiwing at Graceland. They said he looked bloated of course.
Next year will be 40 years for John Lennon.
You’re a Delco guy too. I grew up in Newtown Square.
So you weren't walking in Memphis?
I was stocking shelves at the local grocery store. Heard it on the radio in the stock room.
There are events that happened where I will never forget EXACTLY where I was, Elvis dying was not one of them!! 9/11 and the assination of JFK are two such events!!
I was at work. But I was all shook up.
In 8th grade.
I was17, at a party in Clifton Heights, PA, sitting on a couch in the basement making out with a cute Italian girl when someone came in and broke the news.
Dang.
That doesn’t seem possible.
I was on a sailboat on the backside of Catalina with two in-laws. We spent the evening listening to the radio and lots of Elvis.
Dont remember. It just didnt rise to the level of an incident where I will always remember clearly where I was. The 2 in my memory are the explosion of challenger and the attack on 9/11. I was too young to remember the assassination of JFK
I know where I was for that one too watching Monday Night Football with my dad. Howard Cosell broke the news.
I was swathing wheat on our north quarter.
Technically, he was not on the toilet. They determined that he was standing, had a heart attack, and was dead before he ever hit the floor.
OMG, I’ll never forget that day! It was THE coincidence of all coincidences. I was 13 and getting a haircut at my mom’s salon in Littleton, Colorado where the female owner and her girls were CRAZY Elvis fans! There were Elvis pictures and posters everywhere. The news broke and they all started crying and sobbing! It was horrible. My dad was there - and good friends with the owner - and consoled them all with a hugs. Might have been a good day for him, but It was the longest and most torturous haircut hell day for me.
Wow.....crazy. Sad, crazy, coincidence, you name it. Thanks.
My older brother were driving to Kmart when we heard the news on the radio.
When we got to Kmart the bargin bin at the front of the store was filled with Elvis LPs.
I had hike to the upper reaches of the Tuolomne river above Hetch Hetchy, catching giant brown trout.
Found out from the radio on the way home.
I was 10 and hadn’t started the 5th grade just yet. I remember coming in from outside and my mom being glued to the TV crying.
