The first trailer for Midway - this autumn's forthcoming World War II epic helmed by director Roland Emmerich [Independence Day, The Patriot, White House Down] - has been released, promising an explosive take on the Pacific battle of June 1942.
The movie - hailed as 'the next Pearl Harbor' - tells the story of the epic fight, which saw the Americans and Japanese clash once more.
Set six months after The Battle Of Pearl Harbor, the film is slated for a November 8 release, and boasts a stellar line-up of stars, including Mandy Moore, Nick Jonas, Luke Evans, Patrick Wilson, Woody Harrelson, Ed Skrein, Dennis Quaid and Aaron Eckhart.

It was filmed in Senssurround too.
No. But there is one with a sailor swigging from a Coke can.
Indeed, it was. Among other things, in a scene set on Long Island,a plane is flying over mountains. In 1940, a serviceman is sent to England to fight in the British air force even though the US was neutral at time. Toward the end of the film, President Roosevelt talks of invading the Gilbert Islands, which in December, 1941, were still occupied by the British--and so on.
I was thinking Bette Midler. Oprah will play the lead squadron pilot.
Walter Lord’s stuff is some of the best there is.

There are a few “Midway” documentaries on youtube.
The British one said that the IJN lost most, if not all, of their experienced NavAir mechanics and armorers. That really hurt their ability to prep and turnaround aircraft in future battles.
A Japanese version looks at it from Nagumo’s standpoint, laying out the IJN doctrine time line to prep a strike on what he was dealing with in terms of the haphazard attacks from Midway and that submarine, screwing up and delaying the strike staging.
Not to mention really chastising him on the less-than-competent long range patrol plans that could have warned him before the US CVs were in range to attack him.
“Was already covered in Midway 1976.
Interesting fact. The Jap Americans in Hawaii were never put in internment camps. They were too important in the function of Hawaiian life and couldn’t be spared. Just on the West coast. So Heston’s future in-laws were never “interned” so the scene makes no sense(unless it was done in San Diego where the Pacific fleet were originally based)
They'd have to cover her with lard every time they tried to shoehorn her into a cockpit ...
Pearl Harbor tried to be the next 'Titanic' and failed miserably. Way too much contrived story line that did nothing to contribute to the plot.
Admiral Yamamotos quote about beating the Americans for six months is pretty well known.
But what did he mean?
The US could suddenly turn on a tap and Soldiers and war material would pour out six months later and overwhelm the Japanese?
I dont think so.
I think he knew that the Japanese Navy, even though victorious in almost every encounter, would be worn down within six months.
The Japanese Naval Pilots were extremely well trained, but they didnt produce very many of them.
At that time, a lot of Naval Pilots died in day-to-day operations.
Plus, if you attack a dozen American planes with four Japanese planes, that rookie American pilot at the back of the formation just might get you while you are focused on the guys at the front of the formation.
Figure in losses to antiaircraft and bomber defensive fires, and you need to be able to produce more Pilots.
The Japanese werent set up for that.
The US had been quietly gearing up for war for at least a couple of years before Pearl Harbor.
The number of Aircraft Carriers on order was astounding.
CGI...
In Oprah’s case that stands for Can’t Get In!
I understand that. The treatment of Japanese Americans had nothing to do with the battle of Midway. And those scenes really drag the movie down
Seriously? Please say that it was at least a period can using a church key, and not a contemporary logo’d pop-top...
I keeed! I keeed! :-) :-D
If you’re interested in the true history behind the internment camps decision, I strongly recommend this book:

Includes lots of original documents.
That's the first thing I noticed. A Zero sweeping down to almost street level, in between palm trees and buildings, looks almost miniature. The wingspan of a Zero is about 39 feet. A standard road width is about 25 feet. Sloppy special effects, indeed.
Watched the trailer and got bored. The original Midway was stellar.
Amateurs study tactics...
Professionals study logistics.
In his autobiography, Saburo Sakai said that the Japanese Navy was far too strict in their training. I think he said that 98% washed out and that included some really good pilots that they could have used later in the war.
I have no idea why they didn’t just go back and get them but I suppose once you were out of the program, that was it.
