Have an old car? You’re not alone. Vehicle age hits record

The average age of cars and trucks in the U.S. has hit a record 11.8 years, as better quality and technology allows people to keep them on the road longer. The 2019 figures from data provider IHS Markit show that the rate of increase is slowing, but the average age is still expected to go over 12 years early in the next decade. The average age is up 0.1 years from 2018. People are feeling comfortable keeping vehicles longer because they’re built better than in the past, said IHS Markit Director of Global Automotive Aftermarket Mark Seng. “The quality is higher, lasting longer, withstanding the weather,” Seng said.

How about a ‘85 MBZ 300D that I’ve owned since 1991. Great shape with 245 thousand miles on the odometer ... show it occasionally in local car shows.

Wow. I thought it bad enough that sales tax is charged on sales of used vehicles. Just OWNING a car is taxable in those jurisdictions? WOW!

My limit has been $10,000 total with taxes for any car. My last 3 cars in order.
I bought a 1992 Honda Accord in 1998 and kept it till 2015. Engine did tick tick tick a bit but everything else still worked including the a/c. Repairs were adding up though. Then one day poof and it ended up in a junk yard in a roundabout way.

My next car was a 2003 Honda Accord which I was driving until it was rear ended and totaled. I now have a real nice 2016 Honda Accord Sport (certified) that I will be driving for quite a awhile. It is my first shiny new car : )

It was $16,900 plus tax and extras - dang finance lady had distracting cleavage..... I paid $5,000 down plus I had about $4,000 from the insurance company so close to my $10,000 max ($13,000 owed).

Now then it does have some particulars like running lights that I thought were the headlights as they were so bright.
For my model I have a switch on the stick next to the one for the headlights that turns them off when driving. They come on automatically when the engine is started.
If not in gear they stay on so how to turn off? You turn off the engine, pull the hand brake up then start the engine..... Running lights now off. Other models you got to pull a fuse!

I also have a KARR alarm that beeps the car horn 3 times if say you have the trunk open and the doors unlocked. I was at a gas station when it went off as I had the little door for the gas open. It started me and the driver ahead of me. How to turn off? Put key in ignition and turn forward to start electrical system, but not the engine.
Turn key back one click. Push little button behind blue alarm light under the left side of steering wheel by fuse box 3 times.
You will hear two beeps of the horn confirming the change.
No more car horn going off when any door is ajar.

Honda insist that they lock your doors for you. Choice is 30, 45, 90 secs. So getting groceries out then you better leave the door open or make sure to have your key with you.

I also like the buttons and not a nav screen that you have to tap to change radio stations. I rented a Corolla and I found my finger bobbing up and down driving along trying to change stations. The Honda Sport has regular buttons plus best thing is radio controls on the steering wheel so I can focus on driving plus the car has bluetooth so I can listen to great music I have on my cellphone.

For your car look up simple fixes like pulling a fuse to reboot the transmission computer if stuck in gear like my 92 Accord or other models when you hold down 3 buttons or tap the gas pedal 5 times and hold a button to reset something.

Yes I picked that up from some Subaru boards. Mine was done about 90,000. You lose the motor if it goes. That’s why you see a number for sale with new motors.

Jeeps & good gas mileage don’t go together.

I had a '94 Grand Cherokee that lasted until I bought an '04 Grand Cherokee. That lasted until I got a '14 Wrangler Rubicon. We're it not for some changes in my family circumstances, I'd still have it, but needed something with a little more room so now I have a '18 Cherokee Trailhawk. I am a Jeep fan, and they have served me very well over the decades. I will also be the first to admit that when it comes to gas mileage, JEEP stands for, "Just Empty Every Pocket."

The other day an auto glass guy was complaining to me about how new windshields increasingly have embedded electronics that require firmware updates before installation.

WHY???

This was my second Jeep the first one was a 1946 CJ2A. The Cherokee is a luxury SUV in comparison.

Though technically it was a Willy’s it had well over 300,000 miles when the frame rotted through and we sold it to a cousin who was a mechanic. Not sure how much longer he drove it?

My minivan is 15 this year. It could use some fixing, but only routine maintenance “where it matters”, the bits that make it go— and stop!

My wife’s car is 19 and is actually the better vehicle.

I finally parted with my ‘01 Highlander about 3 years ago. Always ran synthetic oil through it and it was close to 300K miles (can’t recall exactly) and still running well when I let it go.

Mainly he considered it a hassle because he had to take the glass to the dealership to get it programmed before installing it.

1983 Mercedes diesel (w/mech FI), because, too much mucking around by govt on regular “gas” whereas diesel isn’t so easily or likely to be supplemented by alcohol.

Plus - I have NO ignition (or computer) noise generated by the engine! Being a ham operator this was a big selling point ...

They’ve had sensors on the glass for a while now to sense rain and that sort of thing. But why they’d put an actual processor on the glass rather than having it in the dash I don’t know. I asked him and he didn’t know either. He thought it was crazy.
