AI brings Mona Lisa to life, loses signature smile in process

A video uploaded to YouTube last week by engineer Egor Zakharov shows the iconic portrait translated into three different video clips, each featuring Mona Lisa moving her mouth and turning her head as if in conversation — demonstrating that we can now produce realistic avatars using a single image.

Moscow-based Zakharov, an AI researcher with the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology and the Samsung AI Center, and his colleagues published their findings, which have not been peer-reviewed, in the journal arXiv.

Three-dimensional models of the human head are deeply complex, requiring “tens of millions of parameters,” the study authors say. Even with this advanced technology, passing living portraits off as the real deal isn’t likely as our eyes are very good at spotting “even minor mistakes” in digital portrayals of humans. Experts call this phenomenon the “uncanny valley effect,” denoting the unsettling feeling people experience when they see a digital human depiction that looks eerily close to reality.

Traditionally, these digital duplicates were made with a technique called generative adversarial network (GAN), wherein an AI simply attempts to forge a lifelike image. But Samsung’s new system instead scans for facial “landmarks,” reducing the image to just a nose, mouth, eyes, eyebrows and a chin, to produce a sequence of entirely novel facial expressions that seem to give the once-immutable images a personality.

The day is coming when a video will be able to be produced that will be indistinguishable from the real thing.

The movie industry attempted the first major foray into this realm with the film Beowulf. This was done in the style of Polar Express. They are still lacking the finesse of reality but Star Wars: Rogue One gave it a fairly good shot.

Just find out which brain receptors to plug the jacks into, turn it on and sink into sweet, but interesting, oblivion.

In Avengers Endgame, the animation process used to convert Thor into an obese alcoholic was so well done it was scary. The way they merged Hulk with Ruffalo as well.

“Maybe it will force people to use logic, reason, and facts to draw conclusions...”

You can’t force people to use things they don’t possess.

That happened decades ago. At least, you were told by "experts" that it was NOT forged.

It is so easy to lie the public. Just ask J Edgar Hoover or James Comey. At least 1/2 the public will believe anything they are told.

The Thor thing was a body prosthetic, not sure how CGI did that alcoholic part...

As for Ruffalo, he IS a Green monster.

A couple of years ago I saw a similar clip where they did the same thing to Lincoln. It had him walking down stairs. Very creepy in a way, since it sort of brought him to life. It would be interesting to see this done with a painting of Washington.

This will not be a good thing, because nothing will be trusted.

Scott Adams makes the point that the conceit that "photos don’t lie” is and always was balderdash. All photos show what the photographer is seeing, which is hard to separate from what the photographer wants to see.

So having nothing being implicitly trusted could actually be an advance.

Panel 1; "My Lord leonardo, you're such a fool. Mother was right."
Panel 2; "I could have had so many other men. That Michelangelo fellow. Now HE has talent."
Panel 3; "What do you want for supper?"

I got to see the Mona Lisa up close too. Amazing.

As a lawyer, I really wanted to see the Code of Hammurabi, but it always seemed to be in restoration. I think it was my third visit before I saw it.

There is incredible history on display in the Louvre and British Museum.
