I can't handle it anymore. My curiosity has burned for decades about this, and I finally decided that hey, there's a thing called the internet so I can ask:
Why do between about 1 in 5 and 1 in 10 people insist on parking backwards, despite the fact that it's obviously MUCH more difficult. I always get stuck waiting for these people why they try over and over to straighten their cars out. WHY?
I can't detect any trend in demographics... young v old, north v south, city v urban, white v non-white, men v women... just a consistent portion of people who INSIST on blocking me for fifteen minutes while they park backwards! Please... I'll just presume you're someone who can do it in one move, every time and never cause massive jams in parking lots... someone just tell me WHY you do it!!!
And there's a lot of dummies who find it necessary to walk behind your car while you're backing out. I guess they don't realize that it's a whole lot easier for them to see me, then it is for me to see them, yet they'll bitch if you don't see them.
That’s all exactly right...As combat_boots said about one of the relatives, find a place to pull straight through to the next space...You don’t have to ever back up...
Oh? How so? Do the difficult part while you’re sober, then go in and get drunk?
In my industry its a requirement. The thought process is that you are more perceptive and not tired when you arrive vs when youve worked all day or night.
Thanks everyone! I actually learned something!
I park backwards all the time. My car’s rear visibility is far worse than forward, and as I age it gets much harder to do a full head check looking over my shoulder. I am much more likely to hit someone or get into an accident backing out of a parking space than driving forward out of a parking space where I have a clear unobstructed 270 degree view.
Also, when I back into a space, I know what is there and I know it can’t suddenly move into my path. I can’t guarantee that when I back out of a space.
I back into spaces for safety. Simple as that. I don’t know why it bothers you.
...lol I’ve seen some really loonnggg hitches in ranch country.
Well, there is that
Wow—I’ve never seen that.
I can back in faster than I can pull in forward. At my apartment, the spaces are tight and there are wood posts holding up the covered parking.
Backing in, I can use my mirrors effectively to back in accurately. When I pull in forward, I lost sight of other cars and the roof’s wood posts.
It takes an act of faith to forward into my apartment parking space.
My back-up camera is so large, clear and accurate, I can place my car on a dime when backing.
New York State is a money grabber, and makes you have plates on both ends. I’ve had my Statue of Liberty plates since I bought my car 13 years ago. With a little luck, they, and my car will last me until I die. And NY can kiss my ass if they think they’ll ever get me to pay for new plates ever again.
I thought you were referring to parallel parking..
Why? Because they can.
Obviously, you have never been trained to “combat park.”
Because it’s safer to leave by pulling out, instead of backing out.
Quicker getaways
Combat parking, it’s easier to leave suddenly if necessary.
Try it just once, I guarantee you won’t go back!

Don't care if it upsets you.
I’d forgotten about that. You have to have your head on a swivel to avoid people walking in back of you as you back out-while talking on their cell phones and paying absolutely no attention to the situation. It’s more than annoying.
Driving’s bad enough, but the walking thing is just plain dangerous.
