I see these people everywhere in pics and in person.
Well, bgill, it is a habit among the older folks and I think it is fading. The young folk don’t honor the old ways much, anymore.
In the spring, the Japanese hang out under a flowering cherry tree and have a repast. The old folks, wearing kimonos, have a some sake and something light to eat, pickles, etc. The young ones, just get drunk, play amplified music loudly and gorge.
Air pollution is also a factor, but it is predominantly a matter of consideration to others. Whether they are effective is another matter. Peer pressure overcomes logic and reason.
In Japan - It used to be that anyone that had a cold or something would wear it out of respect for those around you. (at least it was that way in the early 90s)
It evolved to people also protecting themselves from germs, pollution, dust, etc
It doesn’t hurt anything and has no underlying meaning.
My reason for wearing one in the future will have less to do with health than the desire for the government to not recognize me through facial recognition.
These masks are worn in large Chinese cities to mitigate the extreme air pollution.
But, during the Beijing Olympics, officials denied there was air pollution there. They said that Beijing is subjected to periods of “mist” and “fog” but not pollution.
Of course, a totalitarian government such as China’s can say such things and not be challenged.
Allergies
Eastern Asians aren’t used to Western Pollen, so you see a lot them out there with mask this time of year.
Sooo many puzzled with rationales of taking showers or washing hands or
With a purposeful grimace and a terrible sound he pulls those big high tension wires down........
Or walking around every moment covered with a face mask?
please...
have you seen them in welding masks yet?
and the long gloves
with a big rim hat ??
Hey, there are worse ways to become part of the local folklore. ;-)
Air pollution.
Can’t believe so many tards are wondering about this.
Out of curiosity, have you ever seen cultural cross contamination to cause mayo to appear on sushi over there?
So why did my asian neighbors wear them constantly in my beautiful, clean Norwood, MA neighborhood?
too much pollution for their poor selves to handle?
There are a few Asian ladies I see at flea markets wearing them. I have never seen a man wear one.
An aside. My husband has leukemia and whenever he is in the hospital they make him wear one. He always draws monster faces on his mask. The nurses love him.
Sounds like mass hysteria to me....or maybe the rest of us Americans offended them somehow.
One of my old projects at work was developing anti-microbial plastics, mostly for sale in Japan. Turns out a significant portion of their population is germophobic.
Never mayo on sushi, that I have seen. They use a Japanese brand, ‘Kewpie’ as a side condiment.
LOL
