Possible link between autism and antidepressants use during pregnancy
Medical Xpress ^ | April 30, 2019 | Duke-NUS Medical School

An international team led by Duke-NUS Medical School has found a potential link between autistic-like behaviour in adult mice and exposure to a common antidepressant in the womb. They also identified a treatment that helped improve memory loss and social interactions, according to the new study published in the journal Molecular Brain.

Antidepressants are commonly prescribed for treating major depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, including in pregnant women. One of the most commonly prescribed antidepressants is fluoxetine, a serotonin reuptake inhibitor. Fluoxetine can cross the placenta and is also detected in breast milk. Little is known about its safety during pregnancy, and not enough studies have been conducted on its long-term effects on offspring.

The team from Duke-NUS and their collaborators in South Korea and Singapore investigated adult mice born to mothers treated with fluoxetine (sold under the brand names Prozac and Sarafem) over a 15-day time period that corresponds to the second trimester in humans, in comparison with those born to mothers given normal saline as controls. They found key differences in behaviour.

Yes...his twin is female...but I know what the mother went thru to carry to term...3 plus months bed rest...probably goes to lack of Vit d as another poster mentioned...lots of possibilities.

I would hope most doctors want pregnant women off every kind of meds, except those huge vitamin pills.

Pregnant mothers NOT getting enough Vitamin D3 probably contribute to problems too.

For years the government made us ALL deficient with their "more than 400iu will kill you" B.S.

I am on antidepressants. If I were pregnant I would stop immediately go through the horrible withdrawal. The baby is going to be subject to all kinds of crap anyway environmental Etc. No reason to pile on unnecessarily.

Mom may be willing to put her kid and everyone else at risk by not vaccinating, but she's not going off her meds.

Back in the day, we were told LSD might cause genetic damage that could result in who-knows-what in future generations.

LSD, amphetamines, antidepressants, vaccines, opioids, & contraceptives peed into the water supply — ours was the first generation to seek “better living thru chemistry.”

Now we’re raising a generation of psychopaths & retards.
Yes, that’s insensitive. Sorry.

It’s often the case that raising or lowering levels of an SSRI (including cessation) causes a whole different set of problems than steady-state usage.

Stop with the anti-vax BS.

I’ve had about enough of idiots like you who act like parents are putting their kids “at risk” by not vaccinating. At risk for what? measles? Chicken pox? get a life and learn to think critically.

Do YOU have any proof of the long-term safety of vaccines? Can YOU prove they don’t cause cancer, autoimmune disorders, autism, etc? No? Then shut up!

Very possible. A lot of chemicals transmit through breast milk so you should stop anything you can.

They tell you to do that if you are breast feeding. If you can't they suggest bottle feeding them after the first six weeks.

I don’t have to prove it. Every study already has.

Stop with the anti-vax BS.

You’re right that anti-vax is BS, but what fungoking posted was not anti-vax.

Our son’s got autism and my wife didn’t take any kind of drugs, prescription or otherwise, during the pregnancy.

I’m not convinced vaccines aren’t involved either. Two weeks after a round of vaccines is when my son suddenly stopped talking at 2 1/2 years old and started flicking a little pencil sized toy and had no interest in any other toy.

He finally started talking at 4yo, riding in the back of the car. He was reading the words on signs. Restaurant, Commercial, Insurance etc and pronouncing them all correctly.

Prior to that, he had taken a test at the local school to see if he was ready for kindergarten and he scored low on everything and Zero on Concept.

I don’t know what to think about the cause. Coincidence that the signs appeared two weeks after vaccination? dunno

Maybe it’s a combination. Something in processed foods reacting with something in vaccines for certain people? If there’s any industries that have the $$$ to cover something like this up, big food and big pharma are pretty much at the top of the list when it comes to power. Between the two of them, they probably own 80% of congress critters.

Why do girls get it less than boys yet some girls still do get it? Is this happening in countries that don’t have mandatory vaccinations? I read one time that Japan has zero autism but I don’t know how true it is.

I’ve also read that treatments to remove heavy metals(like mercury) from an autistic person’s system works wonders but it’s expensive and kinda risky.

I’ve encountered this in my research work with Aspergers Syndrome. It’s not the antidepressants. It’s the mothers mental status that causes her to need antidepressants that is the cause.

It’s caused by the mother’s inability to emotionally bond with the child during the 3rd month of pregnancy when the neural tube is developing.

I had the occasion to work with parents of autistic children. These parents had done their research and one component seemed to be that their autistic children had intestinal problems. That could also apply to my grandson but I do not jump to conclusions but most parents felt vaccines were involved. I had the utmost respect for these parents because the only agenda they had was to find out what caused it. My daughter says Adam was fine unti after vaccines around 18 months and other parents noted the same thing. This is not to be dismissed. So they say it is not vaccines. OK, make other suggestions and someone had better get a handle on this because it is becoming more and more common.
