Geologists discover a new hotspot in Yellowstone supervolcano that's killing off trees in a patch of warm land the size of FOUR soccer fields
A new thermal area has popped up in Yellowstone National Park, in yet another sign of the ever-changing magma activity beneath the surface.
Satellite images have revealed an expanse of about eight acres or the equivalent of four soccer fields where the ground is warmer than its surroundings, causing the trees and vegetation in that patch to die off.
While scientists have only just confirmed its existence, the United State Geological Survey (USGS) estimates its been forming over the last 20 or so years.
Nasa believes drilling up to six miles (10km) down into the supervolcano beneath Yellowstone National Park to pump in water at high pressure could cool it.
Despite the fact that the mission would cost $3.46 billion (£2.63 billion), Nasa considers it 'the most viable solution.'

How many millions of acres of trees are dying in the Western states due to bark beetles???
Trump’s fault.
The BEST THING that can happen now, if God wills, is a 60 mile diameter asteroid (or comet) hitting the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and simply wiping out all the trash on both sides. It is likely the ONLY WAY that freedom can survive for the majority of humans who don’t live on those poisoned coasts.
Geological speaking, its just a hot flash.
Hi “Daily Mail.”

Global warming! Outlaw volcanoes! Somebody dial 911! Somebody dial AOC!
Yeah ‘cause the head goron (al) let us know it’s like a million degress down there.
Your post is nonsense.
Yes! her answer will explain it all!!
( don’t forget the FReepathon, folks!)
The magma chamber is 350 miles long.
What will happen.

Since it is clearly too warm for the trees why drill so far down? Drill until it’s around 100 degrees C and then use it to run a steam generator. Sell the electrity to the locals. Turning all that energy that could power an explosion one day into something useful instead is a perfectly sensible plan.
Not like your stupid reply.
Its called a hydrovolcanic eruption.
When water mixes with hot magma, it turns to gas, and water then becomes a gas. The result is an explosion because the Hydrogen, and yes the oxygen-which gives it the kick, reacts with that magma and a HUGE eruption is the result.
Now it depends on the type of magma, which the type Yellowstone has is ash or silica.
Then, after the eruption, the sulfur reacts with the water vapor in the atmosphere.
Lets suppose they managed to get a hole drilled into that chamber. Even a small amount of water will cause a violent reaction. The GD thing will blow through that hole like hell and then the eruption will grow in size.
Anyone that GD stupid to come up with an idea like this ought to be taken out and shot.
The hole doesnt need to collapse. Water is H2O. What happens when hydrogen comes into contact with super hot gasses and magma?
These people are scientists?
How hot is magma? Not much more than 1000C. Thermolysis not gonna happen.
Ask not who the fools are,
you’ll just get your feelings hurt.
that is exactly my thought. out of the how many acres in Yellowstone, we are worried about 8?
and obviously nature wants to do something there, so we cool it today and it heats up again tomorrow? how much money wasted there?`

It is often the case that those who think they know some things find out that they know nothing.
That’s caused by steam, you nitwit. Not hydrogen.
Steam is what? You moron.
