Park rangers responded to a call shortly before noon Wednesday that someone had fallen over the rim.
The park's helicopter and technical rescue team recovered the body of a 67-year-old man. The name and hometown of the man wasn't immediately available.
The National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner are investigating the death, park officials said.
A spokeswoman said it was the first over-the-edge death this year at Grand Canyon National Park, which had 17 fatalities last year.

I sometimes wonder how many of these things are really suicides. Less embarrassing for the family. More acceptable to the insurance company. If you’re old and tired of life, just take a big vacation to a mountain or a canyon and just get a little clumsy.
Helicopter ride across is pretty cool, it's so massive it's hard to contemplate.
Actually the absolute best vantage point is on the way down. But sadly no one survives to tell us how it looked.
The distance to the faces is long too. So that makes it seem smaller.
There used to be a road downhill beside the monument. It went to Horsethief Pond. As you went down this road, there was an opening on the right where you could look up to the right, and see a face in profile. It was huge.
That was a WOW. It's far larger than you think.
I went to the GC on the river, in a raft, for six days. Enjoyed it.
The thing that impressed me about the GC was that you can just walk up to the edge and fall right in.
In this day and age of liberal bedwetting about pretty much everything, I couldn’t believe it.
I agree. The Grand Canyon and Chichen Itza both were super-impressive to me, but I really have not travelled very much relative to many people. Mt. Rushmore is also good, and Garden of the Gods in CO was spectacular, but I kept thinking about rattlesnakes while there.
B, bu, but one Grand Canyon death is one too many .
Yes to Bryce and Canyonlands and the rest. I’ve been to the Grand Canyon several times. It’s ok, but there are better sights to see.
We need to build a fence!
Make GC safe again!
You are from the northeast, right?
That’s enough. Just fill it in already.
If you stay overnight at the grand canyon and get to watch how it changes in different light, it’s pretty incredible. Personally, I think it lived up to the hype 100%.
I was there in 2011. It is really amazing up close. The colors are unbelievable.
The Black Canyon of the Gunnison, deeper than the Grand Canyon (IIRC), and they used to allow rock climbing.
Have you seen the other side of Mt. Rushmore?
What has happened to Hogg, not a peep out of him for months, is Harvard too tough for him and is he failing???????????
And it’s old guys that should know better, weird.
They're mules. You must watch this seven minute video and you will feel like you're riding one.
Count on it. It wouldn’t surprise me if he’s already gone.
