Uncovered in 1989, a group of German (East) hackers trying to break into Lawrence Berkeley’s computer system (who thought it was Berkeley nuke labs, but it was.. Astronomy’s!). Great read— absolutely true story. Counterintel came in eventually. With the help of Tymnet, he eventually tracked the intrusion to a call center at MITRE, a “defense contractor” (yeah, right) in McLean, Virginia. (front company— another fake- still in business apparently) who was paying their long distance phone bills automatically for their hacking.

I think he is contemplating suicide to end the pain and to forestall further pain. Doing so publicly may be a suggestion to others in the coup attempt that it may be the easy way out. My wife once worked there. It’s actually not a bad place for technical people to work.
I’ve had many a run in with their SETAs over my ~ 40 year career. There’s nothing particularly sinister about them. Just another Beltway Bandit but a non-profit one, not that that makes them any better.
For someone with a John S. Mosby moniker, you don’t show much familiarity with Northern Virginia.
If your intent was to spy and communicate covertly, why would the first thing you do is apply to the Federal Gov’t for a ham radio license that would alert the FCC and anyone with Google Search that you’d done so?
It’s a stupid coincidence. You can buy radio equipment and use it without a license and the odds of getting caught are about the same as winning the lottery. Which is what any true spy would do.
