I think he is contemplating suicide to end the pain and to forestall further pain. Doing so publicly may be a suggestion to others in the coup attempt that it may be the easy way out. He has realized that everything concerning the coup attempt is known and that there is no escape except by his own hand.
Watch for suicides.

Might be! But he seems pretty feisty and is fighting back.
Maybe fake a suicide or tragic accident...(Alas, swept away to sea without a trace!) Then, plastic surgery and flight to Brazil. (Don’t know what he can do about his height!)
