Favorite VPN Recommended by Freepers

What VPN do lots of freepers recommend?

I want to use it at places like Starbucks.

Will use of a VPN slow me down..?

I don't simply want to get the one Rush advertizes, though I love Rush.

I’ve been using Tunnel Bear on my PCs and phone for about a year. Mixed performance. There have been times when I can not connect although I have a good internet connection. Planning on seeing what else is available when the 12 month term is up.

This was explained to me here by the smart person Shadowace awhile back. I have my own VPN server set up using OpenVPN through a static IP service and I found out it’s still not enough.

If racial attacks were as common as the Left wants you to think, they wouldn't have to make them up.

Great tag.

Agree, as in when you turn off location on your mobile device they can still triangulate where you are using cell tower you latched to as well as the info pack about your device including MAC address. When you register your device it obtains the IMEI International Mobile Equipment Identity as part of the process.

I have also looked into the DNS aspect of the whole process and at the end of the day becoming truly “invisible” is impossible.

A burner phone is a good start. If you need to become "truly" invisible.

He tells me VPNs do not hide your activity or addresses you visit from your ISP,

Incorrect if your VPN provider is using the best VPN protocols, i.e. OpenVPN. When such a VPN connection is operating, the traffic sent between you and the VPN Server is encrypted. Your ISP will not be able to see in plain text what you are doing online -- the web sites you visit or any data exchanged.

that they really only obscure your IP address from sites you visit.

this is true.

A couple of thangs . . .

First, I add my vote to PIA aka Private Internet Access.

Second, be sure - whichever VPN you settle on - that it prevents DNS Leak. A DNS leak will allow your ISP to monitor everything you type (including links) that is sent between your 'puter and the VPN node youre using.

However, if your VPN does not "leak," then even your ISP cannot read the traffic from your 'puter. It can see that you are sending data, but it will be encrypted BEFORE it departs your machine.

Here are a couple of links that are useful for keeping tabs on your VPN's service:

https://dnsleaktest.com/

This site will run tests on your traffic between your computer and the VPN node, and then it will show you if there's a leak.

https://www.iplocation.net/

This one will return the IP code for your "location" in the WWW. For example, I just ran it in another tab, and it reports my IP address to be 196.52.10.24. This is Mexico City (the node I'm presently using). I am not in Mexico at all! Woot! Woot!

Believe what you want, but I do know he says VPN's pose absolutely no obstacle in his investigations, he says the ISP logs have everything he needs, and the ONLY ones that are difficult are one's which originate from ISP's outside of the country, and that those are the ones he hands off to his buddies at the FBI. He says the people they have blow the skills of his department away.

Under a functioning VPN (including an automatic Kill-Switch) there can be no snooping. The ISP would only see packets going back and forth from the suspect's computer and the VPN server. The contents of those packets would appear as meaningless gibberish.

Most, if not all, VPN providers use encryption that is impossible to break by any local law enforcement. I seriously doubt the NSA can crack AES-256.

We will have to agree to disagree.

I just paid for one year of service with PIA. A screen comes up to start the process, and I clicked to download the one for Windows 64 bit . Save or cancel comes up and I clicked save. Then... Nothing more happens. It never takes me to the installer. I'm dazed and confused. Have I done something wrong? Any suggestions? Thanks.

It's working for me. I clicked and it is downloading as you can see in the lower left corner.

I don’t get the save dialog.

Try downloading with a different browser. I’m using Chrome.

Afraid I can't help you...I haven't run Windows at home for years.

If no good suggestions here, I'd call their tech support up.
