Are there any other Marines asking the same questions about his DD-214 info? Thanks to Don Shipley for using the FOIA to get this info from Nathan Phillips DD-214, but I still have questions. What status was he between the end of 73 in Lincoln and 75 at El Toro? When he changed from USMCR to USMC (3rd MAW is regular Marine Corps, not Reserve)? Why does he NOT have the National Defense Service Medal if he was a Vietnam "ERA" Veteran? PFC is usually awarded after 6 months. Was he always a Private or did he get promoted and lost rank?

If a guy was stupid enough and timed each AWOL to be about six months apart, then he’d get busted down in rank, and leave service at E1/E2.

I recall some Army associate bringing up the story of some 20-years of service guy getting busted three times in the last six years of service and retiring at E5. In today’s atmosphere, after the second Article 15, most of the services would find a way to prevent you from re-enlisting.

Until 1991 Reserves did not receive the NDSM. Presidential Degrees for Desert Shield and Desert Storm and War on Terror authorized Reserves to receive it. But people should not confuse NDSM dates with the dates that constitute a Vietnam Era Veteran. 5 May 1975 was the end date for Vietnam Era. Only around 3,000,000 vets served boots on the ground in Vietnam. During that same period nearly 10,000,000 men and women served in the armed forces. I am a Vietnam Era vet, Saigon fell when I was at Camp Pendleton going to my A School. Vietnam Era is a designation and impacts benefits. Phillips is a Vietnam Era Vet, that does not mean he was a good Marine. I would be interested in seeing his 214 page 4 with character of service. In the 70’s and 80’s we had no problem with the PC crap. Bad Conduct and Undesirable Discharges were not uncommon. That said you had to really screw up to get kicked out in the 70’s. In the 70’s and early 80’s NCOs and SNCOs handled a lot of the discipline issues one on one. I was a smart a$$ LCpl, one night at the bar while I was having a beer the NCOs cornered me, I agreed to an immediate change in attitude. About a month later, same NCOs cornered me in the same bar and bought me a beer, told me to keep up the good work. Different leadership in those days.

We do need a Cold War medal because that war lasted from 1947-1991. Huge gaps in the awarding of the NDSM occurred during those 43 years. Most people were POGs. They spent years serving their country with no recognition for there Cold War service. A USAF Security Cop walking a flight line in Alaska below zero, protecting fully loaded Nuke Bombers, Sailor’s repairing a subs hull, Soldiers stocking supplies to support their troopers, they all served. Those who served with honor should have their service honored. The real reason Congress did not approve an award was the cost. They issued a paper certificate to save money.

I am surprised your reserves didn’t get it. Reserve members who are ordered to federal active duty, regardless of how long, may be awarded the National Defense Service Medal if applied to the correct time frame. (You’ll notice I said MAY) That was the problem with the liar, he wasn’t in at the right times.

During the time of the evac, he was a reserve just about to get into training active duty. As a rifleman, he would have been considered a direct tactical combat asset. But I understand what you are saying, and you’re right. But not with him with the enlistment and discharge dates.

I don’t know anything about brig time he got, but I do know when I was in the USN 75-79, if I had that many unauthorized absences, I would have spent time in the brig...and I am sure the USN was more lax than the USMC!

And you might have spent it in a “Delta” unit run by Marines!

Every Marine (even my MOS 6682) is considered a “basic qualified infantry rifleman”. That is most likely why we had to use Navy Corpsman and Chaplains.
The evacuation of Saigon was in 1975 and I was in Iwakuni, Japan. We did have to do some “expedited work” not long after that for VMCJ-2 (a photo recon squadron) after the Cambodians hijacked the Mayaguez

Can you help me here, please? I don’t know what two days you are talking about. For him to be awarded the medal for the Vietnam conflict he would have had to go active duty as a reservist assigned to a unit directly involved with the conflict prior to January, 1973 when Nixon ended direct U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War by signing the Peace Accords. Our “self-proclaimed hero” didn’t go active until August of 1974 and has no record of entry into the conflict via his DD-214 so he isn’t eligible. Please explain your entry so I can understand. Thank you.
