Police in Northern California responded to a "mass casualty overdose" situation on Saturday that resulted in one death and a dozen people hospitalized.
Authorities said that the incident was caused by exposure to the deadly opioid fentanyl, which also affected two responding officers, according to NBC News.
Mike O'Brien, a police captain in Chico, Calif., said at a news conference that four of the victims were in critical condition.
"Certainly there's potential for additional fatalities," O'Brien said. "I want to emphasize that."

What you SHOULD be concerned about is what your town/ city is paying your first responders to attack this. Where my daughter works as a paramedic, the annual cost for drug overdoses only is about $600,000 a year in FD response and contracted ambulances. This is in addition to all of the other calls. In a city of about 45k people.
THAT is what should concern every taxpayer.
Thank you Nancy and Chuck.
Build the damn wall....
Vast quantities are manufactured in China, shipped to Mexico, smuggled across our porous southern border, and sold by 'unlicensed pharmaceutical distributors'.
China well remembers Great Britain's successful takedown of China using opium as a weapon.
They have already weaponized fentanyl, and are successfully waging an undeclared war against those they perceive as their #1 threat.
Yes, unlike many, the Chinese have long memories.
I’m not offended, just sad. If you had a son addicted to heroin or some other hard drug you might feel differently. I blame the politicians for not wanting to close the border. It wouldn’t stop everything but it would put a dent in it. Also charge the pushers with a capital crime. They won’t do anything though. Maybe do a death wish on these dirtbag dealers.
Let’s find out where the Fentanyl came from. Start there.
Sorry folks, I can’t have any sympathy for those junkies who OD’d themselves, having one in my family who ruined her late mother’s life, abandoned her kids to serve her habit, had her son commit suicide, and whose daughter refused to invite her to the daughter’s wedding. Singapore had the right way to deal with the whole thing and we need to do it here.
I was that way until my pancreas exploded. It's a lot more painful than it sounds.
I was on morphine for several days (I distinctly remember 21 days, but I was only in the hospital for 5). I would have lapsed into shock and died without it.
It's warm, it's fuzzy, it's a mother's caress, a lover's embrace, and more wonderful and seductive than I ever imagined. I can see now how someone could become addicted.
Me? I got off it the instant I could. Having only been on it a few days it was relatively easy. Had I needed for weeks or months it due to major chronic pain... maybe not so much.
Trust me on this one, it's a lesson hope you never have personal experience with.
I have seen burn patients on for a year or two.
They get detoxed. No problem.
In 1949 when Mao took charge narcotics users were sent to reeducation/work camps. They were given thirty days to come clean. As for pushers, they were executed. As for growers, they were executed, except for the ethnic minorities in the south where some production for local use was overlooked for years.
None of that could have been easy. I wonder if I’d be up to that challenge?
Just an example of what happens when you I won’t defend your border. Gang thugs coming and going constantly traveling with money and drugs. There really isn’t an opioid epidemic as far as prescription medication goes. Where most of the deaths are happening is with street drugs like fentanyl or other synthetic opioids. Likely smuggling in through the southern border. A great big thanks to Governor Brown and all the other Democrats that worked so hard to prevent us from protecting our border
If regular people realized how much this was costing them, they would be outraged. Like, really outraged.
Instead we get inundated with feel bad for the addict programs.
China through Mexico.
Should be a perfect opportunity for the GOP to all get on the same page and HAMMER the President’s enemies.
“Screw em, play stupid games, win stupid prizes.”
I hate to be crass and Darwinistic in my thinking - but I agree with you.
I wish people would not use drugs of any kind. The world would, socially and economically, be a much better place.
Victims of their own stupidity.
