The magnetic pole is moving so quickly that it has forced the worlds geomagnetism experts into a rare move.
On 15 January, they are set to update the World Magnetic Model, which describes the planets magnetic field and underlies all modern navigation, from the systems that steer ships at sea to Google Maps on smartphones.
The most recent version of the model came out in 2015 and was supposed to last until 2020 but the magnetic field is changing so rapidly that researchers have to fix the model now.
The problem lies partly with the moving pole and partly with other shifts deep within the planet. Liquid churning in Earths core generates most of the magnetic field, which varies over time as the deep flows change. In 2016, for instance, part of the magnetic field temporarily accelerated deep under northern South America and the eastern Pacific Ocean.
First, that 2016 geomagnetic pulse beneath South America came at the worst possible time, just after the 2015 update to the World Magnetic Model. This meant that the magnetic field had lurched just after the latest update, in ways that planners had not anticipated.
Second, the motion of the north magnetic pole made the problem worse. The pole wanders in unpredictable ways that have fascinated explorers and scientists since James Clark Ross first measured it in 1831 in the Canadian Arctic. In the mid-1990s it picked up speed, from around 15 kilometres per year to around 55 kilometres per year. By 2001, it had entered the Arctic Ocean where, in 2007, a team including Chulliat landed an aeroplane on the sea ice in an attempt to locate the pole.
In 2018, the pole crossed the International Date Line into the Eastern Hemisphere. It is currently making abeeline for Siberia.

Remember the good ole days when everything was Bushs fault and everybody loved Donald Trump?
These are modern times and the pole is making a beeline for Siberia ... we all know what country that area is located in and who is obviously to blame ...
OH....I’m SURE WE can FIX it!! /s
“Your gauss is as good as mine.”
Very good! I wonder how many are going to point you to spell check.
they were planning on adjusting the model in 2020. Now they have to adjust it in 2019. Oh ... the humanity!
That was funny. It is a giant Russian magnet in Siberia.
Either global warming, or Trump, or both.

...and after tossing the caber, everyone can enjoy the haggis!
So does this mean that when I program my GPS to take me to Cleveland I’ll wind up in Pittsburgh instead?
I do have this 600 pound one, and not surprisingly, it's confined in a magnetic containment system...
We are currently going into a solar minimum. The number of sunspots is an indicator of the strength of the sun’s magnetic field. I’m wondering if there could be some sort of coupling effect between the solar magnetic field and the earth’s.
Any physicists out there who could chime in?
I think it’s all them electric vehicles upsetting the normal magnetic flux...need to scrap them and only use internal combustion....
It’s the trade deficit and steel displacement. We are magnetically off balance.
What the heck?? Why is this on the CIA website? I've read a lot of books/theories about crustal displacements and related geo based sudden cataclysmic theories. But any idea why this is on the cia website? Is it normal?
Adding to that, the sun is not a perfect static center in it’s self. The Sun’s “Barycenter” moves around aside from the earth having an elliptical orbit. And we tend to forget that the whole solar system has an orbit around the galactic center. Who knows what influences our whole solar system and earth magnet as we orbit through different galactic magnetic field zones emanating from the galactic center.
Cool find... Afraid to download it but going to read it.
