Musk plans to unveil the test tunnel Tuesday, as well as the autonomous cars that will carry people through it. He's also set to show off elevators he says will bring users' own cars from the surface to the tunnel.

Tuesday's reveal comes almost two years to the day since Musk announced on Twitter that "traffic is driving me nuts" and he was "going to build a tunnel boring machine and just start digging."

Or a tunnel in a zone that becomes a quake zone. Never say never.

Don’t tell me, let me guess, you’ll be transported by a magic Beam through a Black Hole in one millionth of a second back in time to whatever year and destination you desire.

Correct. I have read that. I believe it was a book of shot stories IIRC.

Or I might have heard it on “X minus 1” podcasts I downloaded years ago. I sometimes can’t remember if I read a book or heard it read.

May the earthquake gods protect anyone who ever uses it.

In case of “the big one” in California, where would you rather get stuck, or worse, above ground or below ground?

In theory anyway the future of self-driving cars means all cars communicate with each other. Their intentions are known. This means they can drive in much greater/tighter alignment, and maneuver and change lanes without causing a chain of break lights behind it. All cars can start to roll when a light changes green, go up to speed together, and arrange themselves by order of priority (e.g. cars exiting soon move to the right, cars continuing on move to the left all automatically). If a hazard is detected, all the cars are made aware and course correct automatically. No need for platforms.

But this is probably a decade away from implementation.

good to see someone thinking about something other than high speed (now low speed) trains from on farm city to another.
