10 tanks that changed the history of armored warfare The tank was introduced in World War I when Britain unveiled the then-secret weapon against German forces and were able to run these rolling fortresses right over German barbed wire and trenches, firing cannons and machine guns into German fortifications. Now, armored columns are a commander's fist, punching holes in enemy lines and then rushing through them to annihilate enemy formations.

I would put the T-34 number 1. It was the first well balanced tank with good armor protection, high velocity gun, and great mobility. The M1 should be on the list but not for the reason listed. It was the first tank with advanced armor protection moving beyond steel using the British developed Chobham armour. The Tiger tank is overrated. It was damn expensive to build so only around 1,500 units were produced and was notorious for being unreliable. I would put the Renault FT on the list as it was the first tank with a turret. I would not include the Char B1. It was a great tank at the time but so few were built and had limited service. Having a gun in the hull design died out after the World War II. The Soviet T-62 might make the list as it was the first tank with a smoothbore gun, better penetrative power for sabot rounds.

I would think that in today’s world, tanks are becoming nearly obsolete.....................

From the author:

The British never used it (Centurion) in combat,

This guy has no credibility. The British used the Centurion in the Korean War. Is there anything worth reading in this piece?

Tanks will be needed but nowhere near the amount though.

Problem with WWII German tanks is they were overengineered to the point they broke down frequently on the battlefield. So often that more of them were destroyed by their own crews attempting to keep their technology out of Allied hands than the allies ever destroyed.

They are like land battleships. I wouldn’t want to be in one with warthogs around, unless they are MY SIDE’S warthogs.

I remember reading accounts of it being used in Korea.

Nope. Not every revolutionary force can afford effective antitank measures.

The Warthog made tanks go the way of the horse and buggy.

Well, enemy tanks anyway.

“Originally designed to give British tankers and edge against German Panthers and Tigers, the Centurion arrived months after the end of World War II and ended up being the greatest Cold War tank instead. It had plate armor while cast armor was still the norm, and its 105mm gun was beefy for the time”.

I think you should read what he said again. To maintain your credibility. Lol

The T-34 was revolutionary because its sloped armor and Christie suspension system made it far more advanced than any German tank in 1941. Indeed, the T-34/85 that arrived later in the war with its 85 mm gun was considered the best tank of World War II.

Agree with your recommendation that the T-34 be Number 1 on the list and the M1 as second - and the Renault Ft someplace in the list. Further recommend the US M48 which saw service all over the world, was reliable and effective, particularly in Israeli service during the various Middle East wars. I watched an M48 take out a VC ambush with precision and enormous destructive power in front of me. Most impressive.

I put the Sherman #1 because when properly outfitted(76mm, HVSS), it was overwhelming. The T-34’s were good because the Russians didn’t mind getting them killed.
If we had built the Pershing earlier, it would be #1 IMHO.

Thanks for repeating the first paragraph. Did you read the second paragraph? You might want to do so, for your credibility, of course.

I read it. The British never used it in combat but other countries did.

I guess we have a stand-off. lol

Merry Christmas!

My old man, seeing them up close and personal in the Ardennes and later again in Germany had a vastly different view of them...

In his understated words - “yeah... you realize just how small your M1 Garand really was...”

Oh make no mistake, as I understand it when healthy and fully operational they were almost unbeatable.

Aww, no love for the M18 Hellcat?

(I’d love to have one, but not the expense or fuel bill)

A lot of people were saying that on August 1, 1990.

The Panther Mk. V has to be on this list.

75mm gun with 100mm sloped armor ripped off from the T-34. Lighter than the Tiger yet just as fierce and if they had the right petrol would have been very fast for a “medium.”
