17-year-old Walmart employee quits over store intercom: ‘Nobody should work here, ever’

On December 6th, 17-year old Jackson Racicot posted a video titled, “How I quit my job today,” on Facebook. As of today, the video has been viewed nearly 300,000 times.

The teen quit his job at the Walmart Grande Prairie Supercentre in Alberta, Canada, by reading a prepared speech into a store-wide intercom system, Insider reports.

“Attention all shoppers, associates and management, I would like to say to all of you today that nobody should work here, ever,” he said over the speakers. “Our managers will make promises and never keep them.”

During his remarks, Racicot noted that he has been working for Walmart for over a year and a half, and calls out his assistant manager for insulting him.

”[Management] will preach to us about how they care about their employees but about a month ago, my boss, assistant manager Cora called me a ‘waste of time,’ and management did nothing.”

I wouldn’t hold it against him. His boss should not call him a “waste of time” and management should not ignore such complaints. He toughed it out over a year-and-a-half. These retailers are becoming harder to work for with increasing micromanagement, higher metrics and decreasing hours.

Just a couple days ago at my business were talking about how they must only maintain the checklanes because of holiday shopping. The rest of the year they sit idle and mock both the customers wanting more open lanes and the employees who know they don’t have hours or labor to open them.

They want everyone going through self checkout, scanning as they shop or ordering for pickup. Millennials have allowed retailers like Walmart and Kroger to shift the checkout burden to them as shoppers. Customer service is not valued as much as cutting labor costs. I make it a point to shop elsewhere when I can because I value the service provided.

My son quit a restaurant after one day....said he smelled like grease. He soon found a nice job.

Twenty years earlier, Moi...mom...worked at a donut shop for one day...the smell made me ill.

Sounds like genetics to me. I, too, got a great job after that.

The culture has changed at some of these companies and not for the best. At 17 he’s limited in his opportunities. And for older workers supplimenting retirement, it may be the best they can do.

He may have outsmarted himself.

That video could follow him throughout the rest of his employment life. It will likely cause him to miss out on some significant opportunities.

Teens and Twenties need to realize that rants on the Internet will likely have long-lasting impacts on their futures.

Too late. Google will resurrect it on every employer’s search of his name. He’ll either have to start his own ‘business’, or file for unending unemployment/welfare.

When I was 16 I worked at a hamburger place. The first day the cook had me rolling onions in batter for onion rings. I did a batch then started another and the cook came over an spit in it and called it special seasoning.

I took off my apron and hat and walked out the back door and all the way home.

Save your opus for when you retire.

The best I ever saw was when an auditor sent out an audit of the progam from top to bottom to the global email address book.

It was a very thorough, professionally done audit report, and there was very little I could disagree with. I think he was really trying to improve the program.

Management did not take it well and deleted it within an hour. I was able to save a copy though.

I might do a 20 year followup audit when I retire. There would definitely be repeat findings.

Good for him. On the flip-side he’ll definitely want to bury, to the extent that he can at this point, that he ever worked there. Imagine a prospective employer contacting Walmart for a reference.


Maybe this will improve treatment of those left behind.

Employee was in an entry level position. What did they expect?

Energy probably should have been better spent honing personal job skills.

I worked as a front end cashier for Walmart. Worst job I ever had. WM has a lot of problems.

As a teenager, I worked in a dry cleaners for one day and then quit. Just wasn’t for me. But I did it politely without making a scene.
