Everyone’s DNA sequence is unique. But for those who wish to maintain their genetic privacy, it may not be unique enough.
A new study argues that more than half of Americans could be identified by name if all you had to start with was a sample of their DNA and a few basic facts, such as the region where they live and about how old they might be.
It wouldn’t be simple, and it wouldn’t be cheap. But the fact that it has become doable will force all of us to rethink the meaning of privacy in the DNA age, experts said.
There is little time to waste. The researchers behind the new study say that once 3 million Americans have uploaded their genomes to public genealogy websites, nearly everyone in the U.S. would be identifiable by their DNA alone and just a few additional clues.
More than 1 million Americans have already published their genetic information, and dozens more do so every day.
“People have been wondering how long it will be before you can use DNA to detect just about anybody,” said Ruth Dickover, director of the forensic science program at UC Davis who was not involved with the study. “The authors are saying it’s not going to take that long.”

And everybody else. Don’t kid yourself, the primary use for DNA data has NOTHING to do with genealogy or criminal law. It’s all about medication. They figure out why some people don’t get the flu and make the brand new, 100% effective, very very expensive super vaccine. And the great part is they can even copyright YOUR genetic code.
Would you agree that a DNA match might be considered a pretty direct connection? Same connection used to determine paternity, only difference is it’s done without one persons knowledge or consent.
I think they’re bogus, at least the ones they have that you can buy by mail. My cousin had hers and her immediate family done to determine ancestry, and she, her husband and their 3 daughters all had completely different countries of heritage. Now I can understand her and her husband not having the same types, but why would one kid from the same parents show Jewish, Italian, Irish, roots, for example, and the sisters have completely different countries for roots? I heard on the radio a while back, that they’ve tested these over the counter tests on identical triplets, whose information should match, and it doesn’t match. Perhaps the tests that are done for criminal forensics are accurate, but I don’t understand how siblings from the same parents can show different countries of origin.
Also, do those of you who are sent the new colon screening tool by their doctors, realize the test not only examines your stool specimen for cancer, the kit also collects and analyzes your DNA?
Just a matter of time before they do DNA profiles every time you do a blood test. (at work or through your regular health exam).
This is why we need to add a couple of amendments to the Bill of Rights. We need to be able to own/control our own information.
Otherwise the lack of privacy in the future is going to kill any freedom we have left.
They can't get your fingerprint or photo because your brother submitted his. So, no, it isn't the same thing.
I certainly wouldn’t publish my DNA. It would show my genetic weaknesses for all to see.

Connection to a Crime.
A distant Relative’s DNA can lead to the Arrest of a Criminal with a little Detective Work. That is how the Golden State Killer finally got caught after Decades.
Imagine a Tyrannical Government using DNA to track down “Family associates’ of a targeted Enemy of the State.
This has Twilight Zone level implications.
Key in for what purpose? Do you work for an American Stasi?
Do you really think people could transact business today without some sort of fungible identifier? So what if it’s a SS#? Would you rather reinvent the wheel?
Or do you blame buildings for arson, too.
I blame the architect for creating a building made of matches and then passing lighter out to all who pass by.
“Imagine” is right. “Enemy of the state” wouldn’t give a damn, because if the government had to go to DNA for connection, it’s because “Enemy” doesn’t even know them.
Furthermore, how does the ability to find criminals over the objection of their relatives count as a bad thing?
