A new calculation compares the effort so far to exploring a hot tub’s–worth of Earth’s oceans
With no luck so far in a six-decade search for signals from aliens, you’d be forgiven for thinking, “Where is everyone?”
A new calculation shows that if space is an ocean, we’ve barely dipped in a toe. The volume of observable space combed so far for E.T. is comparable to searching the volume of a large hot tub for evidence of fish in Earth’s oceans, astronomer Jason Wright at Penn State and colleagues say in a paper posted online September 19 at arXiv.org.
“If you looked at a random hot tub’s worth of water in the ocean, you wouldn’t always expect a fish,” Wright says.

I didn’t sleep well last night but your comment still got a laugh out of me.
Isaac Arthur puts out a whole series of videos on many subjects involving the future.
He does have a speech impediment, but I don’t even hear it anymore.
I saw a YouTube video showing the vastness of the Known universe and the fact that so far we’ve found no evidence that the known universe is not a mere speck in the real universe.
And our galaxy is less than a speck in the known universe. But what was most interesting was they showed a circle in our galaxy with the earth at its center, showing how far away our earliest radio transmissions and “Hello, is there anyone out there?” transmissions have travelled. Relative to the size of our galaxy it was the size of the head of a screw on a car.
That speed of light thing is a deal killer.

Yeah, the distances are so vast between our galaxy and others (the nearest still a staggering 25,000 light-years from us) that in my opinion this discussion should be limited to just the Milky Way. For what really is the point of adding billions of other galaxies into the equation when there is absolutely no hope of ever determining one way or the other whether aliens live there, much less trying to communicate with them. Even with the nearest galaxy it would take 50,000 years just to get a reply from someone and that reply would likely be @#^! !#!$! (!#@^ which would roughly translate to “huh?”
Gee, do ya think? What percentage of infinity of the universe do you think humans have looked at so far? Ok, so maybe we do not know for sure the Universe is infinite...but it sure is so big that we kind of only seen a little bit of it.

If you take a look at the abstract you’ll see that’s not what they’re doing at all. Rather, they’re looking not at the entirety of the universe, nor even at the entirety of the known universe, but at that part of the universe radio telescopes would have a shot at detecting ETI if they could examine all of it. But they haven’t examined all of it; they’ve examined a “hot tub’s” worth. Give them some credit. These guys are professional astronomers and do know a thing or two about mathematics.
Actually bad analogy. That random hottub of sea water is overflowing with life. So far we’ve found zero life of any kind outside of earth.
In the analogy it’s assumed we’re only talking about fish you would put on your plate and eat.
No, I am not going to give these guys credit. Stating they have barely begun looking at the universe for other life forms is the logical equivalent of stating the sky is blue or the moon revolves around the sun. It is such a basic fact as far as our knowledge of what is in the universe as to be an irrelevant title. However, such basic ‘research’ or better yet, such basic writing about research is what passes for scientific exploration in today’s dumbed down society.
Stephan Hawking wrote in his book A Brief Moment in Time that he was advised the number of books he would sell would be inversely proportional to the number of equations he had in the book. So, he added only one equation, E=MC2. I find this fact a sad reality of our scientific studies of today and that is the comment I was making before.
