A 22-pound rock that has been propping open a door in Michigan for decades turns out to be a meteorite valued at $100,000, according to Central Michigan University.
Mona Sirbescu, a CMU geology professor, gets asked all the time by people to examine the rocks they bring her but none ever turn out to be an official space rock.
For 18 years, the answer has been categorically no meteor wrongs, not meteorites, Sibescu said in a statement from CMU on Thursday.
But that all changed when she was asked to examine an oddly shaped large rock that a Michigan man, who didnt want to be named, had had in his possession for the last 30 years.

If you search on “live cannonball” or “live artillery shell” and “found,” you’ll be amazed at how much of that stuff seems to be laying around.

Well, if you think about it, assuming infinite space and assuming stars are in that infinite space, if all of the light from all of those stars impacted the human eye at once . . .

Honestly, I’d rather not, but it is kind of amusing to think about, in an Addams Family sort of way.

Found a similar rock in our field this year. Should take it to the university for identification.

What if the light you see is from a star that burned out 10,000 years ago.

Mr.GG2 took his similarly sized meteorite to the Univ of Washington for the same reason. He had been offered $35,000 for it. The University kept it, refused to return it, cut it up into smaller pieces to share around with other universities and told him it was too rare for a private individual to own. He had to go to court and sue them for theft. The judge ordered the Univ to bring the meteorite to court. They showed up with a piece about the size of a cigarette pack. So he gave Mr. GG2 a $50000 judgement and the University has refused to pay so he will likely never get the money. Never take a meteorite to a University. 😡

Outrageous!
Maybe he could assign the debt to a collection agency. They’d get the money, but take a cut.
