Gov. Jerry Brown on Sunday signed a bill making California the first state to require public companies to have at least one woman on their board of directors to advance gender equality and help break the corporate glass ceiling.
The bill, SB 826, by Sens. Hannah-Beth Jackson, D-Santa Barbara, and Toni Atkins, D-San Diego, was designed to combat bias against experienced, qualified female employees in the workplace.
Yet another glass ceiling is shattered, and women will finally have a seat at the table in corporate board rooms, Jackson said Sunday on Twitter as she thanked the governor for signing the bill. Corporations will be more profitable. This is a giant step forward for women, our businesses and our economy.
In a rare move, Brown included a message with the bills signing.
There have been numerous objections to this bill and serious legal concerns have been raised, the governor said in a letter to the state Senate, a copy of which he sent to the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary. I dont minimize the potential flaws that indeed may prove fatal to its ultimate implementation. Nevertheless, recent events in Washington, D.C. and beyond make it crystal clear that many are not getting the message.
Brown went on to say that corporations have been considered persons for a long time even before women were allowed to vote.

“I am Governor Jerry Brown, my aura smiles and never frowns...”
Under what authority?
Id bring in the hispanic, non English-speaking, night maid, give her cookies, tea, and a magazine, and then get on with business.
Lol, why not require Affirmative Action criteria? Boards must be staffed based upon customer demographics. Race, gender, sexual orientation, sexual identification, disabilities, etc, etc?
“I guess the gay gene also make you stupid.”
It’s a mental illness, so...
This could get interesting. All a company has to do is create an executive board of all inside members to get around it.
An inside director is a member, who has the interest of major shareholders, officers, and employees in mind, and whose experience within the company adds value. An insider director is not typically compensated for board activity as they are often already a C-level executive, major shareholder, or other stakeholder, such as a union representative.
So if they wish to fill this position for the same or no pay depending on what they are and not who, along with being expected to work their job so they can feed themselves, then the line forms at the door. I suspect when the possibles that can afford it try, they will be into the board based upon their stock share and have little say in the proceedings. Now, wasn’t that an achievement?

Name one civilization in history that's gone totally insane and survived.
The vast majority of companies, and all the large ones, will already have women on the board. The issue here is the State of California asserting the right to dictate the composition of corporate boards. Once the principle is established, there will be no end to it. And we will march on to Quota America with everything based on left wing identity politics hierarchies.
So does it count if a board member “identifies” as a woman? This will all crash down around them.
I fail to see how that follows. Regardless of what mental gymnastics you perform, its not at all logical.
Yay California!
Does transgender count?
(A totally serious snark)
What about the other 62 genders?
So they’re countering what they see as discrimination with....discrimination.
26 percent of the 445 publicly traded companies in California had no women on their boards
Time for AZ, NV, and Texas to step up their game on their relocation services and ads.
In California any man who identifies as a woman is automatically transformed into a woman. So all a corporation needs to do is get a male board member to say hes a woman.
If this law will make corporations more profitable, they'd have already been doing it without the law.
So, now newly appointed women on corporate boards are going to ask themselves whether or not they got the job legitimately or were appointed to meet a quota. Well, okay, those with any insight will ask this, the liberals will just assume they got it because they deserved it.
Crikey I thought the objective was to be INCLUSIVE - those racist, sexist, misogynist bastards!
Hire a transsexual, this will piss off the manhaters
Cher....

Nothing like seeing the local representatives:
<>State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson, D-Santa Barbara
<>Congressman Salud Carbajal, D-CA 24th district.
Remember when the big tent republicans tossed the real conservative congressional representative in favor of Michael Huffington (Arianna’s ex)?
