Maybe it works better if recited in a Midwest twang.
Yes, it’s possible it rhymed when he said it!
A few miles west of Fort Riley is Abilene.
One of my earliest memories is driving across country to California, after Dad returned from Korea in 1952.
We stopped in Abilene, to visit my Grandmother's family there and took a color photo of Dwight Eisenhower's home, a photo very similar to this one:
My family made some cross-country drives, too.
Nice house.
On the afternoon of Friday, October 1, 1858, Lincoln had a luncheon at the home of his attorney friend, Daniel H. Gilmer in Pittsfield, Illinois. Lincoln then headed across the street to the town square, where he spoke for two hours. Following the address, Lincoln, at the request of Gilmer, went to the portable canvas photo gallery of Calvin Jackson on the northeast corner of the square and sat for two ambrotype poses. The photos were soon processed, but one was not finished, probably because it had been overexposed. Lincoln requested that copies of the other be delivered to two Pittsfield friends the following day.
When I last visited the Eisenhower home Ike’s bedroom was as he left it for West Point. His childhood hero was George Washington. Not a bad role model, eh?
My childhood hero was Clara Barton.
Young Dwight must not have had a crowd of younger siblings who needed his bedroom ;-).
Little Ike (Dwight David) was the third of seven boys.
Not sure about sisters.
Then they must have put his room back for the museum display.
My youngest (6) is trying to get a third sister to join the military, so she can have her own room.
