Another story that got no coverage during all of last night’s excitement is this:
A Russian maritime patrol aircraft with fourteen service members on-board disappeared from radar over the Mediterranean Sea Monday, officials said.
“On September 17, at about 11:00 Moscow time, the connection with the crew of the Russian Il-20 aircraft was lost over the Mediterranean Sea when the plane was returning to the airbase of Khmeimim, 35 kilometers from the coast of Syria. The mark of IL-20 went off the radars disappeared during the attack of four Israeli F-16 aircraft on Syrian targets in the province of Latakia,” the Defense Ministry said.
“At the same time, the Russian radars fixed missile launches from the French frigate Auvergne, which was in that area.”
According to CNN, the aircraft was ‘inadvertently shot down by Syrian regime anti-aircraft artillery on Monday after the Syrians came under attack by Israeli missiles.’
The fate of the crew remained unknown at the time of this posting—a rescue operation is underway.
There is a lot of speculation out there on this topic. Early reports said it was shot down by Isreal. Other reports said various other entities were responsible. Some reports said it was a spy plane.
I have no opinion. Not enough info. But definitely an event of interest.

Whether the IDF jets “pushed” the Russian recon plane into the path of the missiles is unknown. Why Syria is apologizing might be because the “French frigate Auvergne” is on loan to the Syrians from their colonial-era benefactor?
