The first people arrived on Easter Island (or, in the local language, Rapa Nui) about 900 years ago. "The founding population, according to oral tradition, was two canoes led by the island's first chief, Hotu Matu'a," says Simpson, who is currently on the faculty of the College of DuPage... These statues, or moai, often referred to as "Easter Island heads," are actually full-body figures that became partially buried over time. The moai, which represent important Rapa Nui ancestors, number nearly a thousand, and the largest one is over seventy feet tall...
Recent excavations of four statues in the inner region of Rano Raraku, the statue quarry, were conducted by Jo Anne Van Tilburg of Cotsen Institute of Archaeology, UCLA and director of the Easter Island Statue Project, along with her Rapa Nui excavation team. To better understand the society that fabricated two of the statues, Simpson, Dussubieux, and Van Tilburg took a detailed look at twenty one of about 1,600 stone tools made of... About half of the tools, called toki, recovered were fragments that suggested how they were used...
There are at least three different sources on Easter Island that the Rapa Nui used for material to make their stone tools... quarries cover twelve thousand square meters, an area the size of two football fields. And those different quarries, the tools that came from them, and the movement between geological locations and archaeological sites shed light on prehistoric Rapa Nui society...
Van Tilburg urges caution in interpreting the study's results. "The near exclusive use of one quarry to produce these seventeen tools supports a view of craft specialization based on information exchange, but we can't know at this stage if the interaction was collaborative. It may also have been coercive in some way.

Oh, now we rely on local lore?!? Or just cherry pick it? In other articles about this, Jared Diamond was debunked, so those are worth reading as well.
Which also explains exactly how the island's inhabitants 'mysteriously' disappeared .
I like the “Lord of the Flies”-like collapse better.
Last week’s episode of Ancient Aliens was about the connection between the Marquesas and Easter Island. It was pretty interesting, as always.
How did they get John Kerry to model for those statues before he was even born? :-P
Same thing happened on Easter Island as in the Negev Desert in Israel.
Cutting down all the trees to move large stones changed the local climate.
In Israel, the Negev was where they made Chariot Wheels for Egypt.
My theory is that they introduced liberalism to their society and smugged themselves out of existence.
Maybe he wasn’t born.
“The founding population, according to oral tradition, was two canoes led by the island’s first chief, Hotu Matu’a,” says Simpson, who is currently on the faculty of the College of DuPage... “
I can see why this may have been debunked, as I have my doubts that a more than 900 year old man would be on the faculty of the College of DuPage, unless of course, he had tenure.
maybe hes a democrat
“I have my doubts that a more than 900 year old man would be on the faculty of the College of DuPage, unless of course, he had tenure.” Ruth Buzzy Ginzberg is well on her way to that level as a Supreme.....sorta’.
He’s 900 years old, he’s a democrat, and he votes in every election. Several times!
My husband used to teach with Dale. I think he’s physically in Australia, and currently an on-line teacher for the College of DuPage. Definitely not 900.
I was able to decipher the symbols, wink, wink. They say Don't eat at McDonald's, or Burger King, but Chick-Fil-La is great stuff. :-)
Oh yeah. Bupkis.
It's a complicated story:
Markings on the backs of these "The Children of the Sun" represent the sun on the horizon, the two v's below the horizon represent their conciousness of the summer/winter solstice, indicating that these people were into celestial navigation. Rapa nui is the closest island to the node delineated by; the tropic of Capricorn and one of the five 72degree nodes that the ancients divided the world into. These five nodes start at Alexandria. Another is Tonga Tapu, Gavea is close to another. The solar observatory which was moved during the building of the Aswan Dam was directly on the tropic of Cancer. Rapa iti is directly opposite Alexandria. There is certainly a lot more to the ancient civilization on Rapa nui than scientists would have us believe.
