First, distinguish between sealed cases (not so common) and sealed indictments (common).

The www.uscourts.gov/sites/default/files/sealed-cases.pdf article from 2009 notes 284 sealed indictments persisting from 2006. at least one reddit article misrepresnts this as only 284 sealed indictments filed in all of 2006.

On the same page this number is reported (17, 24 of the pdf), the article notes that "In some districts, indictments are initially sealed as a matter of course.

Based on that, I think "the number of sealed inditments" without considering more data, like for how long and for what reason, is misleading. I would look at the number of pending sealed indictments over time, not how many were filed sealed in the first place.

....someone checked the sealed indictment list and noticed over 10,000 have been unsealed since yesterday.

I'm not a lawyer, but that sounds pretty definitely like someone's just dumped a boxcar of feces in the propeller.

(That's a very serious case of SHTF for "listeners in Rio Linda".)

-- IIRC, I read different articles by 3-4 different legal eagles (don't know if they were atnys or media folks well versed in such) and they were fairly straight forwardly insistent that the average for a number of years had been in the 1,000 range derived from the same sources as the 40,000 figures are now derived from. --

I can take one given source and derive all manner of misleading statistics from it.

Average number of sealed cases (apples) is 1,000 per year, and look, now we have 40,000 sealed indictments (oranges)!

Obviously I can't dissect an article I haven't read, but my BS detector is triggered on somebody getting excited about a sudden 40-fold increase of ANYTHING.
