Ken Burns and Lynn Novicks ten-part, 18-hour documentary series, THE VIETNAM WAR, tells the epic story of one of the most consequential, divisive, and controversial events in American history as it has never before been told on film. Visceral and immersive, the series explores the human dimensions of the war through revelatory testimony of nearly 80 witnesses from all sidesAmericans who fought in the war and others who opposed it, as well as combatants and civilians from North and South Vietnam. Ten years in the making, the series includes rarely seen and digitally re-mastered archival footage from sources around the globe, photographs taken by some of the most celebrated photojournalists of the 20th Century, historic television broadcasts, evocative home movies, and secret audio recordings from inside the Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon administrations. THE VIETNAM WAR features more than 100 iconic musical recordings from greatest artists of the era and haunting original music from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross as well as the Silk Road Ensemble featuring Yo-Yo Ma.

TY. Will have to look that up.

They have nice timeline summary on the PBS site.
That’s the way I saw it also.
The MSM told lies about TET 68. The NVA never won a major battle. Maybe some think the 1st Cav got totally wiped out in the Ia Drang. I personally saw the 1st Cav Patch painted on a mountain overlooking the valley. The damn NVA were ready to surrender when Nixon called the bombing halt. Giap says so. Not once did the NVA really win until we withdrew/quit.
I hate a despise Ken Burns.
Not only is he pathetically liberal, injecting blacks/race into every single subject with an entire sob story episode or more, but he’s far overrated in story-telling. He’s BORING.
Hell, he made me want to sleep though BASEBALL, with the slow and dreary music in it and the sad-sack narration. I’ve been able to stay awake enough to notice how he always manages to make us all feel guilty about being white Americans.
I guess we watched two different films because I did not come away with that. Everything you say they left out I recognized. They did not ignore what you call the pro enemy communist,as a matter of fact they even named them.
“The North Vietnamese Army and the Viet Cong were not the national liberators that Ken Burns want us to believe.”
Nor that George Lucas wants us to believe, that Luke Skywalker’s Rebels are the VC and Darth and the Empire are the evil USA.
This was the argument used by liberals against maintaining support for South Vietnamese president Ngo Dinh Diem. However, after he was overthrown and murdered in 1963, I don't believe any of his successors were Roman Catholic.
in the end, the South Vietnamese didn't lose because they failed to win hearts and minds. They lost because they ran out of ammunition thanks to a niggardly Democrat-run Congress.
I can tell you my Montagnards killed VC like flies on the local security OPS we ran. We mainly fought NVA and not VC. A 32 man unit(30 yards and 2 SF NCO’s kicked entire VC companies out of their bunkers as the Montagnards knew the jungle, highlands, etc, better then any Viet whether NVA, VC, or sad ass ARVN.
The Battlefield series’ are the best war documentaries I’ve ever seen, especially the WWII ones.
And thank you for yours.
You nailed it my FRiend.
The pivot 2/3 of the way through was astounding, but totally expected from Burns.
Unlike you, I watched it all till the end.
The last 1/3 was like you were in the Twilite Zone. Totally over the top left wing bias.
You were in the Highlands so yes, most of your encounters would have been with NVA. This film depicted much of what you just said. They just never ran out of people and was generously supplied by both Russia and China.
Read their history - also about Ho Chi Minh going to President Truman for help against the French retaking VN after the defeat of Japan.
He did an excellent job with WWII and the Civil War. There is no reason not to learn history.
I have learned to over look the bs. You should too. Every thing associated with Hollywood is rabidly liberal
I am only through episode 7 so I look forward for that slant.
Well not me but the male side of my family and thanks too.
IO gave the reason why I prefer burns VN over Battlefield. It’s not that they are bad one or the other. They both provide a valuable record in different styles. Room for more than one history book in the library. best wishes.
Yes, they did show that and how Truman never got the memo.
